Buy a Slingshot Fuel, get like a 2005 or something for cheap so its ok if you screw it up, and just go out and mess around with it, its not as hard or dangerous as everyone says, just make sure to wear boots so your board doesnt get away from you.

Thats just bad advise.

New equipment and the equipment that schools use today is the safest way to go and it very user friendly.

Take lessons, not one but lots.

Plan on making an investment in this sport. The lessons are worth the money. It makes kiting more fun and gives you the confidence you NEED when you get in a tight spot.

There's no way you can learn as quickly on your own as you do in lessons. Also, if you do forego lessons and buy used gear because you plan on teaching yourself, you'll probably just get frustrated and give up - wasting your money on used gear.

I took three weeks (30hrs) of awesome, cheap lessons in Santa Marianita, Ecuador, and I still consider myself a beginner. Only after all those lessons do I feel confident enough (on the Columbia) to go on my own with my own gear. I just bought from Pepi at 2nd Wind. Good shop, good advice, and it's a great way to get to know the community.

once again thanks for all the advice! I am going to take start off with a 5 hour lesson with air-pirate and pick up a trainer. Once I have a good grasp on the concepts I will be looking for some used gear that is recommended by the local shops and instructors.

As with many forums everyone has been very helpful, I have a great work schedule that allows me 3 day weekends every week so I would love to tag long and pick up some pointers by watching until i am ready to get on the water myself.

As i said before I have a decent boat I take out a lot so if there is a spot that is only accessible by boat I would be willing to hook up a ride in trade for some pointers.
thanks again
