Just a summary of your options given 8 years of kiting in this area; these are presented in terms of best to worse given your skill and kites...

1. Sauvie.. light wind, totally newb friendly, notoriously fickle
2. Jones beach, wide open, stronger winds (way out in the river), lots of space. Going to need a 9 to fill the gap.
3. oregon coast. need a good wetsuit but good wind (seems like it is either 7 or 14 most of the time), wide open, safe, bring somebody with you.
4. Hood River, you can fly your 7 but you really should get a 9, avoid on weekends, pay attention to what the fuck is going on, stressfull place to learn but everyone has done it.
5. Kalama.. kited their once, lots of meth head douch bags milling around. nobody else on the water, just had a weird vibe..hook up with some of the peeps that ride their allot and will likely be much better.
6. Rooster rock. wide open, nuking winds, only goes in fall and early spring, sand in your ears and cocks in the bushes.
7. Stevenson.. only after you have SOLID skills and get advice from locals AT the launch about how it is done. Great place to kite, very skilled kiters have gotten FUCKED up here..

places to avoid:

1. Vancouver lake- filled with feces and wind shadows.
2. that place on the WA side near sauvie..can't remember the name...never fucking blows.
3. the kiddie pool at HR (if it ever shows up)
4. Milling around the launch/land spot at Stevenson. (in the water- preventing launching and landing).
5. Bingen. sketch launch
6. the bushes at rooster rock.

Smile

Good list Monkey,
Sorry, I should not have even brought Stevenson into the discussion. I myself got jacked up there so I know all about that.
I just meant have a look on your way home sometime and someday if you are a couv resident and your skills are ready for it, you will probably want to ride that spot.
The comments by everyone else are pretty much spot on.

Yes good list but I would like to expand upon it with some additional comments:

1) Yes, SI is fickle, but it can have some of the steadiest wind around and when that happens it is awesome. Place has sucked ass for about 4 yrs now, but it has to come around sometime.

3) Oregon Coast: Some places have fan steady winds and others like Manzanita can have some big variances with more onshore wind than other places. Ocean bays are dangerous with tideal flux, but especially with ebb tides (going out). Yes, most of the beaches are pretty desolate, but there are places with congestion. These places should be avoided, ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE LEARNING! IE Seaside, mid beach at Manzanita, L. City, and most places at Cannon beach.
5b) Woodland (exit 22 on I-5). Can do point sailing there or downwinders from Kalama, but if you are a beginner, I wouldn't suggest this.
6) a few times a year during the summer months (August usually) it will be like 90 to 100 degrees and Rooster kicks in. This typically produces the steadiest East winds of the year. Great day out there when this transpires. Unfortunately there is a direct correlation between the heat and the choad factor. Rule of thumb for Rooster is get it early as it tends to weaken after noon. But I have noticed that on the really hot days, it blows into the evening a lot, but still will drop off.

Thanks Pdxmonkeyboy for the awesome list on places to kite, it's appreciated!.

Yaaa after reading the other forum I think I'll wait a while before I hit the HR! So I think my plan is to be patient and wait for wind at Sauvie and the sandbar to show up in Hood river. And If I'm able to, drive to the coast and go to Sunset Beach.

Well I guess I'm going to have to do a lot of waiting around this summer.

And I'll get a 9m when I can afford it which probably won't be until next summer.

Does this look Like a good plan?

Thanks again For all the help!
