not the rider going straight down the wave (riding towards shore).
is this correct? |
This is my suggestion and a guideline. It takes some experience on an open beach break to tell what a kiter riding back towards the beach is going to do. In a beach break there are potential down the line/parallel riding waves all over vs. a point or jetty break where there is an obvious place the kiters are picking up waves.
In the beach break scenario, be like a surfer scanning the outside for bumps. There may be a kiter traveling on a bump well before it has broken. The kiter is not going parallel to the beach but the wave they are on is "theirs". When the wave gets to breaking, the kiter will go down the line. A major problem is that the kiter going out just sees a wave beginning to break and if there is no one on it, fine to jibe and ride it. If there's a kiter tacking on the face before it breaks assume they will be heading down the line and hitting faces once it jacks up. The outbound kiter's options are a) time when the wave kiter is going to go down the line and head hard upwind of him or b) turn around and head back to shore and let the other kiter pass or c) bear way down wind past the breaking wave and out of the way.
a) and c) are hard to gauge until you are experienced wave riding or watching riders. b) is the safe option. |

This ain't exactly sexy or glamorous, but here's a conflict-minimization strategy:
If you're on a seaward reach and somebody's riding a wave in, it looks like it's going to be a "close encounter" (insert theme song here), and you can't figure out where the wave rider is going to pass you or are not sure which way to turn:
Just sit down on your ass for a few seconds and tea-bag it, with your kite parked overhead!
Let the wave rider work around you. Easy.
Side note: if you blow-in kooks up at Manzo can't figure out how to behave yourselves in public, you are no better than all of the rest of the stupid tourists that clog up the coast all summer long--you just have neater toys. You can go home too. |
