Ok I need to get a decent session in this weekend. Haven't had one yet this year. We have three days and I can go anywhere from Hood River to the Coast. The closer to Portland the better but I'll drive where the wind is.

Sooooo, predictions! Where is the spot to be and on what day?

Duh, where else?...Hood River dude!
Okay I am pimping for my town but we kited everyday this week except one and it will be the same this weekend.

Plus (and I am really pimping now) We are buying the beer after kiting on Saturday.

Saturday: A 40 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 59. West wind between 9 and 17 mph, with gusts as high as 26 mph.

Ok then for those of us that have basically never kited in hood river and certainly haven't when the water was this high where should I park/launch? I know there have been threads about it recently but a quick recap would be much appreciated.

You have 3 options
1/ Marina beach, but you must stay away from anyone playing on the beach, they have right of way.

2/ The spit. Where we are doing a demo on Sat. Great launch if you are careful. Many launching options. Safest here is to walk out to the underwater sandbar and drift launch.

3/ Event site. We have been granted temporay lauchiing rights. See the forum for notes

Did I mention Free Beer after kiting on Saturday?. Also for laughs we are going to see who can toss a windsurf board the furthest, that will happen after several beers.

Dude... you live in Beaverton and have never kited in Hood River, even with 200 plus posts??? That makes absolutely zero sense.

Thinking the same thing. I don't get out much, but....

No offense, seriously. Go to the highway and drive east.

Sadly, I won't be there. But July, I will be.

Last season was my first. I took lessons in HR but after that I pretty much stuck to Sauvie as it was the only place I could really go after work. Also being new I didn't think I had the skill to deal with the frickin' zoo that HR gets on the weekends when the weather is nice. This year I'll go to HR when there aren't better options because I know I can get upwind out of the throngs of people.

Hopefully that makes a little more than zero sense Smile

Sauvies...?

You need to go get some real wind - your learning curve will increase way faster.
If I was you - go east this weekend (Hood river on Saturday "free beers with Dave after a session - good vibes" - Rufus/Roosevelt on Sunday...)

Save the SI days for the summer, when the wind blows a wee bit more.

The possiblities are endless...
Hope to see you out there this weekend...
Good luck..!

Cheers...

Definitely get some kitting time in HR. My wife and I took lessons at the event site and then got 15 plus days on the river last year. Even being beginners everyone was extremely nice we spoke with; remember to ask questions if you're unsure about launching/riding locations. I really believe kitting at the event site has improved my kite skills massively over kitting in a less "busy" location.

Hey KT,

This is an Ocean Rodeo event. So we will have their Rise & new Razor kites in most sizes. We will also have their surf, twin & freeride boards (Mako) in all sizes.

Yes will be in the parking lot right beside Kite The Gorge. If a user isn't comfy launching from there we will send one of us out to launch you on the sandbar no worries.

Have you been to Jones beach? It tends to be a much better wind option than Sauvies. Lots of room to launch, lots of room on the water, pretty good sized swells in the channel to get you prepared for kiting in HR. It is not really that much farther than Sauvies.

This weekend though - hood river and further east will be the best for wind and a chance to see that yellow thing in the sky. The spit will good cause the Windance crew will be there to lend you a hand.
