That is sad and tragic news. Probably vacationing with his family when it happened.
Kiteboarders are not immune to shark attack if riding in the salty water.
I spend alot of time in the ocean kitesurfing, surfing, SUPing, etc. The one time I feel really vulnerable to shark attack is when I have fallen on an outside jibe and am body dragging to recover my board. Out in deep water where the sharks are lurking, made a big splash to attract their attention, and then start zig-zaging back and forth like some kind of big fish attracter. Generally, I try to not prolong the board recovery process and get going ASAP. Always breath a sigh of relief once I am up and riding again... |

| Definitely tragic, though sharks are probably rarely one of the many dangers of kiteboarding. I suspect the spring time cold water presents a much greater danger. Kite with buddies and wear the kooky safety gear! Fly safe. |

 Hard to imagine the intensity of the rescue mission...incredibly sad.
Even if the probability of shark attack is low...it's not zero....which presents some real psychological hurdles at times. I'm with Windian a little on this one....chumming around on a Dakine bait hook out in the Big Salty deeps makes one strive for board-finding excellence. |

Got to be Joking. This is a LOCAL kite sport in San Rafael next to my house. Way inside the SF Bay, WAY INSIDE. This happend on my birthday also..... WTF!?! I don't believe it, unless it... maybe a big sturgeon.

I know man, its FUCKED! I kite at Ocean Beach, Dillon Beach, and Stinson Beach all the time.... not to mention Waddell, Pismo, and other California beaches on road trips. These are known to be some of the Sharkiest beaches around with sightings and recorded attacks at all of them.
I'm on pretty good behavior at these spots focusing on not losing my board and spending too much time dragging, but when I get inside of the bay I feel so safe and relaxed..... but there is still the DA DA, DA DA, DA DA.... whispering through my head. I actually quit wearing polarized glasses while kiting cause you can see everything in the water, shit you don't really want to see! Nurse sharks, Sting Rays, Surf Perch, and the dam seals gawking at you like dead bodies floating in the water.
I love the ocean!! |
