Here is the Port of Hood River's newly revised parking rules and regulations for the Event Site and surrounding access roads.

Please note the color coded areas and the Parking Map Key indicating restrictions and limitations for certain access road zoning.

For further information on the background discussions and reasons for these changes, as usual the Port Commission meeting minutes are always available for the general public to view at : http://www.portofhoodriver.com/Minutes/11April.php

90 minutes, that sounds good. This way only windsurfers and kiteboarders will need pay( unless they are quick) and everyone else can come down and park for free. We need to always make sure that only the kiteboarders and windsurfers pay. kiteboarders and windsurfers are evil and need to be penalized for bring money into the region.

I think that's a bit harsh Mark. Parking time limits on city streets are pretty common. We're getting access to some pretty nice facilities, I don't think it's unfair to help foot the bill for those facilities. Plus, spit parking is free this year. If you don't want to pay for parking, you can use the spit. Just saying...

Im with mark on this one. So why no toll up at lot 6 where they just put in that nice beach/ park for the tourists and kids. I would have to argue that they have access to much nicer facilities than those at the event site or sandbar. If your cool with getting taken advantage of then your prolly cool with it. Just saying...

Please see that attached link for further information regarding the challenges that the Port has been facing with parking. This may enlighten you on some of these changes.
In fact, some of these 'changes' are actually really not big changes.
Originally much of this parking has always had certain restrictions, it is just that at this point some of the excess curbside parking is now causing issues with emergency access and commercial vehicle access. As well, some of the kite schools have had issues with parking access for their customers.

The temporary parking spots just before the tollbooth are reserved specifically for Kite Schools to use as they please.

As for the paid parking, well, the Event Site is a location that costs more to run and maintain than it makes in parking fees. If the Port is to continue offering this location as a recreational user location it can only continue of they are able to get some sort of budget control over this location (that does not mean that it has to be profitable, just not cost way more than they can afford to spend running it).

For those of you still seeking free parking, as a concession, the Port has decided to make all parking at the Sand Spit Lot FREE!
Also, you can park a bit further south on North Street Rd, or North 2nd St.

Regarding Lot 6 - This is a light industrial zoned location and cannot be utilized for primary parking, but on overflow days will be opened up for people to use when the Event Site is at max capacity.

If you are bummed about having to pay a daily fee, well, then you can also make an early buy purchase of a seasons pass at a discounted rate.

Lastly, if you ever had issues with what goes on at any of the Port properties, you have the opportunity to visit their website for all meeting notifications and meeting minutes to get yourself educated and attending meetings so that you can make a difference. It's a lot more effective than making backhanded comments on a forum of your peers.

We used to be able just park on the gravel ("event site"?) parking lot.
The north side gate used to be open. Then they added new posts and
chains, why?

The posts are a normal part of the property. They take them down during events that require overload parking in this lot.

The posts being down were likely an oversight by the maintenance guys and are now being watched closely.

What are the fee hours? I couldn't find that on the Port website. I'm guessing 9-5.

I think 7:30am to 7:30pm is when the hut at the event site has someone present. Not sure if this is the same as the fee hours.

This is a great map and I applaud all efforts to organize the parking system along with the great amenities (grass for pumping/drying and bathrooms).

My only concern is that in the past few years there have been many days when the parking lot at the Event Site is full. This new system, which eliminates a lot of parking on the street, will force more people to buy season parking passes to the Event Site. Which will cause a parking lot FULL situation more often. So, where do you park if the lot is FULL and; you paid for a season pass?

Maybe it makes sense to close Portway Avenue and the north end of North 1st Street to traffic and turn these old roads into paid parking for kiters/windsurfers/spectators. The Port built the new North 2nd Street that enables this change to happen.

We need more parking. Not less!

This lot will be open to users on the overload days which are usually number between 4-6 times in the summer time.

When the lots are filled more often and with consistency from paid users, then the Port will likely do something, but when the lot is only full 4 to maybe 5 or 6 times a year and almost empty 70% of the summer season and tons of people are not paying for parking, then they will likely not see a reason for change.

The change starts with us. Are we going to begin using the parking lot and paying for passes more consistently?

when we buy the pass it would be great if we could note windsurfer vs kiter or both then it would be easy to track number for future CGKA requests.

if event site parking passes were the same price as a snow-park permit then I would be more inclined to throw down on one, but it's easy enough to find free spots

Clearly buying a pass is the easy (and perhaps PC thing to do)

Does anyone knows are the streets public or private (owned by the port). If private then which agency has the budget and legal authority to enforce parking rules. If public then what authority does the port have to set parking restrictions on public roads?

Ran into this same issue in our community which has private roads. The local law enforcement agencies do not recognize our "community parking restrictions" and will not enforce them...

Just curious

Thanks Pepi. Yeah the overflow parking for paid customers makes sense. When I bought my pass this year, the Port is keeping track if you are a kiter, windsurfer, or both.

Besides the Marina, if anyone finds free parking in Hood River area with access to grass for pumping and drying, then please let me know. That would be a score.

For right now, there will likely be a grace period of notices being left on cars and license plates being recorded, then after the parking signs have been posted there will only be automatic towing.

Parking violators will not receive tickets, they will simply have their cars towed away.
