Nuclear power is an excellent way to produce power...until something goes wrong.

I still say bad idea. It's totally clean...but not really. I couldn't imagine having to completely abandon my home and neighborhood forever because of some mechanical failure.

It's not as if the japanese are not thorough and detail oriented. I have to think they had multiple safety systems installed and they were all maintained. I always imagine that Chernobyl was held together with duct tape and bailing wire but Japan is not Russia.

I mean,is this worth it....

Mike, even if its just doing your job, you are a good man for doing it.

Does anyone have a link to an actual report with actual numbers for radiation levels?
As a nuclear worker and someone with a strong belief in nuclear power I wish the best for those affected, and hope that lack of understanding and a certain degree of media fear mongering about this event has a minimal effect on the future of nuclear power. This will be without a doubt a major setback, but we should be able to learn from it and move forward.

Specialk is right in saying that a very small fraction of the population really understands how nuclear power works and the actual risks associated with it.
It is up to the more informed people (regardless of opinion) to prevent misconceptions from affecting the opinions of those who aren't.

If anyone has links to articles or reports of value please send them to me.

Educate me.

Is it true that it takes hundreds of thousands of years for spent nuclear fuel to become non-radioactive, and that high-level nuclear waste must be stored deep underground, without any possibility of contaminating ground water, despite earthquakes, climate change, other natural disasters, future interventions, etc?

And that there are currently roughly 270,000 tons of spent fuel in storage worldwide, much of it at reactor sites themselves, with additional annual accumulations of used fuel of about 12,000 tons, of which only about a quarter of is recycled?

I'm not an expert, but if either of the above statements are even remotely true, then I know what my position on nuclear energy has to be.

Ditto....how can we even begin to believe that we can manage that much danger over that long of a time frame? Going down that path without a good plan in place for safe long term disposal was irresponsible of our generations.

Great link! Of all the reports I've read, this is the easiest to digest and provides the best overview.

Yeah the picture was pretty fucking gruesome but let me assure you its one of many that are out there. I did a big research paper on nuclear waste in college, its transport, handling, and storage (yucca mountain was big news at the time). It is pretty damn dangerous stuff no matter how much you know about how it is generated.

Radiation is just bad ju ju. Do I want the risk (however small) of chromosomal mutation and damage so that I can run my air conditioner in the summer? There are thousands of nuclear plants that operate without a hitch for decades. Like I said before, they are great, until something goes wrong. In a world where "shit happens". This is one shit that I would not want to step in.

Surprisingly, earthquake insurance was reasonable... All signed up, now I gotta look for fallout insurance.
