Sun Mar 13, 11 9:11 pm Epic Rooster Session |
|
|
So today's Rooster session was pretty epic. Three people showed up. Moto, scott l, and myself. (Img 1)
The whole area is flooded so we had to walk in quite a ways before we could find a spot of grass that was suitable to pump up on. (Img 2)
Moto got out first and did some survival kiting on his 7 meter Waroo. It was nuking and gusty. Scott got out for a short session but came in after a few minutes. I think Moto was out for a whole 10 minutes.
I pumped and lined up last so they were both done by the time I was ready to go. As I was lining up the clouds and rain moved in pretty hard. Interestingly enough that completely changed the wind pattern. After launching once and having the wind die for a second and my kit Hindenburg I decided to do a water launch. We put my kite on the water and suddenly the wind just died and my kite started floating up-river. The wind completely reversed direction in 5 minutes. So after Moto and Scott kited on nuking gusty Easties I got to kite on a westy. (Img 3)
My session lasted out and half the way back before some crazy wind vortex bowtied my kite and I had to self rescue. As I was self rescuing Martin and Scott swam out to help me bring the kite in (Img 4)
All in all it was actually kind of an adventure. Definitely not something you should do solo. We didn't have any kitemares but there was some definite possibility. It was an experience.

"Epic" is hardly to the word of choice for sessions like that one.
I have had a few sessions like that in my days, and they are best referred to
as a"Debacle". Admit to the defeat and be real with your humility, otherwise you will lose credibility quickly with your fellow kiters.

How is self-rescuing in 39 degree water not a kitemare? You could easily go hypo out there, even with the right gear and a quick self rescue. Glad you're not a popcicle floating out to sea right now.

I was close to shore, not in any kind of current, no rocks or branches around, was not alone, and was wearing sufficient gear that I didn't even get cold. I don't understand in what way that could possibly be considered a kitemare.
I may be adventurous, excited, dumb, choose your adjective; but I'm not an idiot. I'm not going to kite if my gear isn't warm enough to permit a self rescue and even if I do end up in a kitemare, I'll jettison the kite and swim to shore before I turn into a popsicle. My kite is replaceable, I am not.
By the way a hood with a rash guard is amazing for keeping your head/neck warm.

Soon we will get some sunny warm weather! It's the middle of March and the time just changed.
No need to force it :O) But, I applaud your effort.

We checked RR, decided water level looked like a PITA so rode the airport for an hour or so, way less windy than Rooster but very steady. Flat water and less current inside the wing dam. Fun start to DST and another thumbs up for OR Pyro toastiness

Yes I am for the cold weather at least. After my december ponds session I decided the water was too cold to be body dragging back to my board all the time. I didn't really get to test it that much this time except it was nice to not have to worry about my board while I was self rescuing.

I think it's cool that you're putting yourself out there and giving us the feedback. For me, it puts my drive to get my kiting stoke in check and wait a bit longer. I think you covered yourself well with help and warm goods. The season is right around the corner. Let's just not do something stupid before then.

Check out that wind shift yesterday! Were you out there when that happened, between 3 and 4? If anything sounds like it was educational!!

Yes we were I was trying to throw my kite up in the air when it shifted from E to W. Then after about 80 seconds in the air a vortex bowtied my kite. That will teach me to toss my kite up when the wind is shifting drastically like that.
It was a pretty crazy thing to experience. When the wind is nuking and gusty as hell easty you don't expect it to shut off and switch directions completely in the span of 5 minutes. Some lower clouds and rain moved in at the same time so that probably had something to do with it.

That's called the "Rooster Switch." Not to be confused with the "Rooster Reach-Around"
Happens when the sun is out as well.

Being one of the three to walk two miles through mud and water only to kite about 10 minutes before "pulling the rip cord"........it beat the hell out of sitting on the couch all day.

Hey Scott. Thanks for coming out with us. We may not have gotten much kiting in but it was definitely some exercise and an adventure.
