I've always wanted to try Ilwaco. I have driven arount the head and all around Ilwaco a ton of times working over there and I always look for good spots. Thre are several good launches and butter smooth waters to make you jizz in your pants....

I live on the Washington side and have searched and kept my eyes open for options to kite on the Washington side anywhere other than Long Beach and so far no luck. Chinook County Park looks promising at a 5ft tide or lower on a SE, S or SW. Pilings everywhere though. Good launches in Ilwaco with butter wind? That'd be cool. Id be interested to learn of promising spots without having to drive an hour to Tressel Bay for the easters...

I driven by Chinook several times, but always decided to hit Fort Stevens instead. Too many hard objects in the water. Also, I was thinking about rafting over to the island across from Illwaco boat ramp and kite off of that island. Anyone tired this?

Ive thought about that island across from illwaco, next time theres east winds we should hit it up. I have a wave runner, it would just take a couple minutes. But it would be nice to have to boats, would suck to get stuck out there. Or loose power and get washed over the bar. Also there is a island shaped like a crater 10mi up river from astoria full of sweet flat water, in the center of the crater. I have drewled over that spot several times flying small planes up and down the river. Check it out on google earth.

East Sand Island is the island off of Ilwaco and barbies huge nesting populations of varies bird species. The north side of the island is riddled w piles and the south side is in the ripping main channel. Hard core. The U shaped island is called Miller Sands is a National Refuge and I'm not sure if it's a protected area or not. Also contains nesting birds including the brown pelican. Iv also been sizing that area up for awhile. Multiple boats definitely necessary. How about a Washington to Oregon trek with boat support. That's my dream. One day...

The horse shoe shaped miller sands bay is also very good.
Tami and I camp on the washington side right across from that place---miller sands.
Takes a boat or a waverunner.
And it may be a bird sanctuary?--not sure---we have never been hassled.

Huge sandy beach on washington side of miller sands but wait for slack or one hour after incoming tide switch to prevent major issues.
And it IS THE SHIP CHANNEL between the washington shore and Miller Sands island so be aware.

It's an experience and worth the trouble with good westerly or NW winds.

Don't go to Miller sands when it's iffy----go when it's definitely gonna blow and it's sunny.
Photo from washington shore toward Miller sands.

Nor Bay (chinook county park if you are not local and want the map name)
Really fun. Super shallow and a good place to teach someone to go upwind.
Gotta plan with the tides though.

Another photo of Nor Bay.
