Or at least pretty cool.

Saw this on Engadget this morning

That is really cool, though I don't think it will be as useful as GoPro... The GoPro cameras are used for all kinds of shooting situations, while this one is aimed just at people looking for that half in/half out water shot. Interesting thing about GoPro... I was at NAB in Vegas last April, all the latest greatest "3D" technology coming out, super expensive camera's on display, and yet it was the GoPro booth that was packed with people. They sold out of all the cameras they brought to the show. You see them being used on TV shows all the time. I think they've secured a good niche market.

Why would you get a contour over a Go Pro HD?

Field of view is not wide enough... Only up to 135 degrees, which misses out on the full point of view feeling that Go Pro's have. You can get to 127 degrees with the Go Pro by switching to the R5 setting.

Looks like the Contour goes from 135 to 110 degrees... The lack of a true wide angle lens is what made Go Pro succeed over all the other POV cameras there were out there before...

And a wider angle lens doesn't just mean you get to see more, it means you get a more stable image, which in my opinion is much more important than even the resolution. A 1080p image is gonna look like total shit if the lens isn't wide enough. It's like trying to hold a camcorder steady with the zoom up to 10x... every movement is magnified 10x.

Contour shoots 110 degrees wide at 1080p, GoPro shoots 127 degrees wide 1080p. Contour shoots 135 degrees wide at 720p and the GoPro goes 170 degrees wide at 720p.

Contour has a sweet on/off switch that you can operate with gloves on. I found that on my GoPro it was very difficult to tell whether I'm on or off.

The other contour feature is the laser lights. Makes lining up the angle on your helmet cam perfect. No more shots of your feet or the sky.

Also Nate your right except Feild of view is 135 deg @ 960p not 720p. Or as you said 111 deg @ 1080p

I am going to test mine on a night mtn bike ride tonite.

Ahhh, I was wondering what the deal was with the dual laser lights. That's pretty cool, definitely nice when you don't have an LCD for lining up shots. I'm digging the ergonomics of the Contour as well, definitely low profile.

The whole community vibe Contour has on the website for sharing footage, especially GPS enabled footage, is rad too.

We're both right actually, contour shoots 135 deg at 960 and 720p. http://contour.com/camera/hd_spec I just normally ignore 960 specs, as it's a non-standard resolution. IE I would never output a project in 1280x960, I would just edit in a 720p timeline and crop accordingly. That's just me though... Average user won't mind 960, it's a good half way point.

What's that, 3 shots for teching out? Hahaha I'll take 4 for good measure. Thumb's Up

Looks like the main difference is the go-pro is waterproof, a contour isn't.
Stringy-- Would a housing help people with the contour?

the OVERUNDER cam seems like it would be the ideal kite camera.

contour is available as a waterproof cam just like gopro. the problem is the price jumps substantially for the surf package at $360.00 retail when compared to the gopro surf hero that comes in at $270.00.
gopro costs less and has a proven track record.
the gopro is only available in HD wide angle.
the gopro is not perfect, but seems to do the job for what most people want to use it for.
for POV stuff, you want a wide angle and this is why this gadget is so popular. so it kind of depends on what kind of experience you are trying to capture. for example, if you stick a gopro on your center strut of your kite, you will look like an ant. if you stick a contour on a kiteline mount for an up close point of view, you will most likely capture the control bar and not much else.
on another note, contour is a NW company originally founded as a company called vHoldR. I think they might still reside in seattle. I tried emailing them a couple of weeks back but no response.

Here's a good review of both on the MTBR site
http://forums.mtbr.com/showthread.php?t=528187

Also I am officially declaring my bias, we now sell the Contour. Just got them in yesterday.

Stringy, your prices were a little off but I am not going to state prices we sell stuff for in this thread for fear of getting shot and pissed on.

Nate, I shot handlebar mounted mountain bike shots last night and it was okay, need to bring more lighting next time. I only had my little lights with me.

After looking at both companies web site's I would have to say Stringy prices were dead on.

So that Contour GPS seems like a pretty cool thing. Too bad the waterproof case doesn't work with it.

It's going to be tough deciding between the GoPro and Contour next season when I get ready to buy one :/
