Surfing will indeed become a mainstream sport.

Looks like a good way to suck the soul out of surfing. Surfing is about a relationship with the ocean. Respect for its power. Paying dues. Learning to read the swell and the tide and the wind.

Do not want money grubbing commercialization.

Blah Blah Blah! What are you smoking dude? Have you seen any of the line-ups at any of the breaks, anywhere? The world needs more places to surf, that's for god damn sure. Surfing is already totally screwed with commercialization, get over it.

Besides, everyone should get a chance to surf. Even people who don't like salt water, the threat of getting eaten, and kids who live in Oklahoma and won't get to spend their youth learning to rock a shortboard.

Good thing Kelly Slater is at the helm, he has a lot of respect, paid his dues, and knows the ocean pretty good I'd say.

have you seen the set-up at any major surfing contest? commercialization has made its way into mainstream surfing like it or not. Even though I do agree with you that surfing is about connecting with a natural medium and respecting the ocean.

The commercialization allows outstanding athletes like Slater to make a (NICE) living doing what they love. If you want to ignore the commercial aspect you pretty much can... just go out and enjoy the sport (although you're still going to BENEFIT from commercialization, because without it you wouldn't have all the sweet gear options).

The wave pool just adds another dimension to an amazing sport. If you want you can just ignore it and do your own thing. One of the cool things about surfers in general is the laid back to-each-his-own attitude.

chill out anti commercial dude!

Been there done that. I used to surf 2-3 times a week when I was growing up. Fact is I am not in the same condition I was when I was in my teens and 20s. I don't live as close to the good breaks as I used to. I still live to ride waves and hang out with friends.
If a guy like Slater can bring surfing to the places where surfing is not right at our back door, I am all for it.
So far attempts to make artificial waves are pretty weak. The FlowRider system is probably about as close to surfing to date. Still there is a lot of work and money that needs to go into it to produce the quality if waves that will meet Kelly's standards.
Give him some time and learn from an objective viewpoint once the final product is released.

No, but how sick would a cable park, plus a wave pool be? Hitting the kickers!
