I had the opportunity to meet a guy named Marc Van Grinsven last night at Double Mountain. He looked a little like Grisly Adams with a full beard, a plaid shirt, and a knit cap on his head. It turns out the guy is on the journey of a lifetime. He started at the Great Lakes, built his own birch bark canoe, and has spent the last year paddling over 4000 miles to make his way to Astoria. Over 1500 miles were spent going upstream and he has had hundreds of miles of portages along the way. The guy and his two partners are minimalists with no waders, drysuits, or any other niceties. He's maintained a $500 total budget for the entire trip. According to Marc, the last time this journey was done was over 150 years ago.

Anyway, he has some really amazing stories to tell about his journey and is a super nice guy. The reason I'm posting this is that they're paddling to Stevenson tonight and are headed to the Walking Man Brewery. I highly recommend anyone who can to go there tonight and get an opportunity to meet Marc and buy him a beer.

You can check out his website here: www.paddleforsustainability.org

I saw them paddling just e of hood river yeasturday. I was on 84 and my cousin said what a crappy day for a canoe ride it was raining and windy. Then my cousin says are those indians. I say that real indians don't have canoes must be some kind of lewis and clark wana bees. funny that I was right. cool trip though.

Sounds like a fun adventure!

Hosted Katie and offered a couch after she ran the Mohave solo (ya she was rather ripe also Razz) then recently she paddled 3,038 miles solo across the Atlantic for safe drinking water for 3rd world countries.

He told me that they did a lot of dumpster diving to keep their costs down. They brought a big bag of wild rice along, but scavenged most of their food along the way. I don't think there are too many micro breweries on that route, so it was probably a good reason to splurge. I'd probably have my beer air-dropped in if it were me doing the paddling.
