PostTue Nov 02, 10 12:02 pm    Board with a core from the NW... Reply with quote

Here's some info on a wood strip board I just finished: 137x43, 33cm tips, 4cm rocker, 3mm concave

The goal: all-around board for 80kg rider in area where lulls come more often than gusts, with tip area and width for pop and glide, but not too flat a rocker line... ...hopefully the rocker, tapered tips and light glass will keep the width from causing too much of a beating when it blows up and gets choppier... Tips seem maybe too flexy, but the middle is fairly stiff...

A few details....
Core 2 layers of ~7mmx20mm western red cedar strips
3mm thick at tips, ~14.5mm at center, ~6mm at rails
Rails and inserts are epoxy filled with cotton fibers and graphite
Rails rounded 50/50 between straps, harder at tips
Skin 6oz e glass plus 6 oz e glass reinforcements
Resin Research epoxy.
bare 3.2 kg Confused

The weight has me wondering if I should have used lighter straps than the luxuries, which add more weight than I like - they are like 500g apiece Sad but nice and soft...
The strips I started with weren't milled precisely, and I had no planer, so there's a bit more epoxy in the core than I wanted...
Easy to get shape right with 2 layer core, but a single layer would probably save 150-200g. Maybe next time, this one was partly just to use up the strips on hand....
Not ridden yet, we'll see how she goes.

Wanted to post this here since some nwkiters/builders gave a little inspiration...
although I am not really up to the standards some here have set.
Thanks guys.
Thread with more pics @kookforum if anybody cares to look ....

Since glass is light I added a 2.5mm filled epoxy layer under fins to avoid core damage. The epoxy goes all the way through the core in the fin screw area...

Dry fit to table. Look how simple that table is -blocks at ends, 3/8 birch ply, some deck screws, a batten under the middle for concave -and it's fair to within 1mm. BTW Strip cores hold rocker well, concave, not so much...

Well I tried the board I started this thread with a few times last fall and it was nice, the rocker and flex came out well and it goes fast enough, upwind, pops, carves and slides ok.
But at 43cm it needs a little brother for when the wind is good and chop kicks so I am making a 132x40 version.

I've noticed more TT boards this year with channels, but have VERY little experience riding TT channels (not a wake guy).
They look kinda cool and remind me of some windsurf boards with channels I liked long ago.
So I kinda want to make a board with channels, ...
I am thinking of a misfit-like pattern slight Vee into 2 channels.
Or a simpler shape with no Vee.
Either way, just a little less rocker than the bigger boards I have made,
& pretty much same construction....

So if any of you guys that have ridden say Jokes, 2011 SS boards or whatever else freestyle with channels have a comment I'd be grateful, in the thread or by PM for info on what you think, dimensions you think are good, bad, etc.

I think I will end up making 2 boards, maybe one with only some concave, and the other with channels -or one with vee through channels, and one with concave through channels.
Gluing up the strip blank for the first one now...

You should try your original board with boots. Sounds like a better fit spec-wise for when it's windy. Cool board btw.

ahh Slither you spotted my slovakian impostor!
I also have a gorge-built slalom seatrend, haven't used either for a while,
need a new boom but keep putting my $ into kite stuff instead....

Thanks for the kind words on the board guys.
In real life the finish is far from perfect, and I would like it to weigh a pound less.

It does look boot-ish I guess, though I got to the shape looking for a little glide for lulls while keeping pop and some carve ability.
Seems like it works ok so far until I hit sharp chop, then I really feel the width.
It definitely isn't glassed for boots though, so I'll pass on that option.

Thinking about cutting some channels in the new blank this weekend.
I'll post up some pictures as it goes....

Nice in OBX this time of year, board lived through a few more flat landings,
cut some butter in 30kts... actually a fast ride, surprised me.
Really lets you know when it's time to rig down though, so a little bro is in the works...
