So I'm getting close to that point in my training where I'll be filling out a dream sheet for where I'd like to be stationed (and I'm going to go ahead and pretend that the navy actually cares what I put down)

I've narrowed down my top choices to Pearl Harbor, HI and Bangor, WA and can't make up my mind what would be better for Kiting/living.

Any thoughts?

I'm in Hawaii now.

Your answer should be obvious.

"Bangor? I barely knew her..."

You'll always have WA/OR as a place to come home too. Bangor is small and a road-trip to get anyplace decent....while Honolulu will give you a whole new experience, warm water and Naish spreading the kite stoke around the whole island......which seems to be more your style so why are you asking this question again????? Very Happy

Good luck....hope the Navy grants you your pick.

I lived in Hawaii for a while, f%$#ing incredible. That was pre-kiting though.

Kiting on Oahu is never as consistent as the Gorge/Oregon Coast. You can go months with no wind... When it's good, life is great. Very Happy ( Surfing is a lot more reliable. )

Also, single woman in your age bracket are in seriously short supply. What, 20, 30, 40,000 single military guys on the island? Skews your odds somewhat. I talked to a number of military guys who hated their Hawaii tour for that reason.

Me, I'd put Hawaii first on my list. Living there has such a cool vibe. You don't get that vibe visiting, you have to live there. Live off-base if you can.

Good luck dude!

I have a friend that I grew up with that is in the Navy and lives in Oahu. He used his housing money to buy a house and fix it up. He lives in Kailua or close to it. He doesn't kite, but he got into spongeboarding, diving, and taking photos. He didn't know shit about photography when he moved there and now he's making some money at it.

He has some sick barrel shots. Check it out. http://www.facebook.com/pages/Carpe-Wave-Photography/112581748760545

Anyway it seems like he has a pretty awesome life. He usually gets off work at like 2 or 3 and goes to the beach. They also paid for him to get some sort of nursing degree. Unfortunately he will be moving as soon as that program is over.

I vote Hawaii.

Andy

Let' consider the facts:

*One of the most perfect climates on Earth vs 9 months of 40 degrees and rain.

*78 degree tropical water vs 50 degrees at best.

*Perfect reef surf vs a hodgepodge of mediocre beachbreak at best.

*Chicks wearing G-strings on the beach vs girls hunkered down in gortex rain jackets.

Hey, the Washington thing beats the shit out of Hawaii anyday. Better yet maybe there might be an opening in Nome, Alaska which is probably paradise compared to these 2 hellholes.

Hawaii. 100% Hawaii.

Lack of women? What? There's a brand new supply of women getting off of airplanes there everyday! Wink

Wow,
I don't know what came over me.
Its been a very slow couple of months for kiting here in chucktown.
Got a good session tuesday but cut my foot open on a shell got sticthes so the navy gave me lortab.
I was just worried about getting "stuck" in hawaii, but that's hard to do with good wind and waves.

Chooch- at least nukes are mostly college dropouts, not the very bottom of the barrel. And submarines/carriers cost way more than 5 mil
