I'm taking my first kiteboarding trip and need to buy a bag for my kites and board. Do the "golf bags" actually work as far as dodging the oversize fees is concerned?
Am I going to have to lie about the contents of the bag? Any advice appreciated. _________________ I Thought I Was Wrong Once But I Was Mistaken

Put a golf club in it; don't lie. Sometimes they'll ask you to open it up.

According to Alaska Airlines, golf equipment is exempt from the oversize fees.
Just keep it under 50lbs to avoid the overweight fees.

Here are some links discussing golf bags. To sum it up:
- Keep the bag under weight.
- Dress like a golfer.
- Know that certain airlines are aware of the disguise (hawaiin airlines in particular - they can be bag nazis fer ser).
- Try putting a golf club in there with some golf balls so when they ask you whats in it - you can honestly say "golf club, golf balls and some Tees"
- Check curb side if you can and have some cash in hand.

I just flew on Continental to South Padre Island.
As I walked up to the counter, with my brand new NSI 'Pro Golf' bag, before I could say anything, the lady said:
"I know you don't have golf clubs in there, so there will be a $100. extra charge for that bag". I said: "I have golf clubs in there (I had 2 old clubs), along with some other recreational stuff". She said: "Only golf clubs are allowed...anything other than golfing equipment gets charged...do you want to check in this bag?"
That was that!!!
I would have felt like a fool putting forth any kind of an argument....

So you just rolled over and played dead--hmmm, interesting response.
In Cozumel this June my Deceiver bag weighed in at 54 Lbs so they made me open it up and shuffle some items to a different bag. When the agent saw my 'golf harness, golf club pump, Nylon ball-catcher and Cleveland hybrid' they didn't say jack. In fact they gave a half smirk and looked the other way
It's entirely subjective whether an agent will give you a hard time or look the other way in our case--altogether we prolly got lucky, but I wouldn't say the cat's out of the bag in absolute terms.
Like others said, dress like a golfer, carry cash, pack light, rent a board on site and for God's sake don't ever fail to put up an argument, it's always worth a try.

I'm with JMatic - your duty as a kiter to pull out a golf club and scream "Fore!" _________________ Go Deep!

I would recommend renting a board at destination and only packing kites. Hawaiian in particular has charged an extra $100 when they see a board in your bag, regardless of containing clubs or not.

Jmatic, homeboy gave it his best shot and the lady called his bluff. What more should he have done. She asks to see the bag and wallah there are golf clubs and "other stuff" - you get charged for the other stuff. _________________ Still rockin gojos, *ssless chaps, and ankle weights!

I packed 5 clubs in the SS tour golf. (along with 4 kites, 1 board) it was 50 lbs.
For good measure I put in a Driver, Putter, Wedge, 7i, 5i. Strategery proved
itself when the woman asked to have a look. Stuck em right on top of my gear
and when she opened it up, 5 clubs were staring her in the face.
Harness, bars, and the heavy stuff I took on the plane or put in a 2nd bag.
They already charge per bag (so when the airfare is $308, factor in at least another ben franklin)
"Hawaiian Airlines : For tickets issued on/after January 21, 2010: Checked baggage fees paid at the airport will be $25 for first checked bag and $35 for a second checked bag. Customers pre-paying for bags at check-in, on HawaiianAirlines.com will pay $23 for the first checked bag and $32 for the second checked bag."

OK is it just me or are we letting the cat run rampid.
I dont play golf much anymore but even my mother knows there no such thing as a Slingshot golf club. A Best putter? A North Driver? A Naish fairway wood.
C'mon.....don't freakin hand it to them on a platter. At least have some fake prints of golf courses and a few fuzzy tiger golf club covers hanging off the damn thing.

I stand corrected....but you get my point right?
Two guys in the woods are camping and a grizzly bear happens upon them. One guy freaks and the other calmly puts on his running shoes. The freaked out guy says "what are you crazy, your'e never gonna outrun that bear". The calm guy responds "I know, but all I have to do is outrun you".
Stay one step ahead.
Which brings up a question. Does it say anyhwere it has to be all golf equipment in the bag? Thats a big bag, you could just be efficiently managing your luggage space. What if you play golf and kitesurf? _________________ __________________________

Just send your gear FedEx ground. Carry one carry on and a personal item on the plane.
If you want you can get a roll of that huge plastic shrink wrap from Home Depot and use it on a duffel bag and ship your gear without a box. Same thing with surfboards. Pad the he'll out of it, shrink wrap it and send it FedEx. _________________ KB4C!!!!!!!!!!!!
