No wind in the gorge. ikite shows the coast being windy, but I know they're not always accurate. Anyone else looking to the coast for Tuesday or Wednesday? I've never ridden the coast. What is the safest, best spot to kite on the coast for a somewhat newbie?

I would have to say that Manzanita is one of the safer spots since the wind tends to be a little bit more side on. Most other spots are side shore winds which can make it a bit difficult to make it back to shore if you break down. Another nice thing about Manzo is the beach is HUGE and at low tide you have all the room in the world to launch/land without being around beach goers.

Forecast looks solid from Monday afternoon until Wednesday., Thursday might go but its a bit far off to call right now.

I thought about heading out noonish if its looking good but the latest forecast says NE east wind 20-25. NE is just not good, even for buggying at manzo. suber swirley. Never actually been to the ponds but that might work if all else fails.

I'd check out Fort Stevens. Strong wind with a direct North forecast might have a decent shot there. Also, super long mellow beaches.

Chooch knows his stuff and I agree with him that the wind tends to be more on-shore and the beach is pretty big and there can be really no one on the beach at times.. . .Manzo does have crowds up on the north end and south end by the state park (evening, holidays and weekends). There tends to be more driftwood on the beach than say the South part of Gearhart up to the South Jetty, the slope of the beach is pretty steep, so the water gets deep just about 15 yards off the waters edge and so the waves ramp up quicker, are thicker/heavier waves and unload just as faster. The rip currents are stronger, water is colder than up North. And finally, Manzo can have steady wind, but as a general rule, its wind is stronger with more variances.

If you are learning, go to the Northern strip where it does not blow as much, the wind is steadier when it blows, the slope of the beach is way more gradual (basically from South Jetty of the Columbia to Seaside, the beach is a getting all the sediment from the discharge of the river. . .ie one can walk out into the ocean for about 100' or so and still touch the bottom. This also mellows out the rips some. . .) Waves are more gentle. and there are way less people. Water can get cold, especially after days of N to NW wind, but as a rule, the water seems to be a bit warmer as the water isn't as deep and your not getting the deep water up-flows like the beaches south of Seaside.

Go when the winds have a NW direction and your $.

From my experience on the coast, this seems to be the most learner friendly IMHO.

Manzo rocked today lots of kites out there wind built up til dark great fun great people saw some newbs trying to work it out seems like a good learning spot not as desolate as gearheart for traffic and people but doable if learning the waves could be intimidating but I hear they get bigger further north cool spot all around I see why this is the place staying up at cannon beach always wanting to kite here but the wind is waay less then the 15 minute drive to manzo

Canon Beach was amazing today. All 2 of us had fairly smooth 9m kinda day for 3+ hours, but burr that water is chilly.

Thumb's Up
