Is there a particular reason that kite gear travel bags are disguised as golf bags? I can see maybe to mislead thieves... but golf clubs are pretty expensive themselves. Is it something to do with the airlines and their bag restrictions?

Bingo!

But to be honest they have caught on....especially at the popular kiting destinations.

I have found that weight is the only important factor....if you keep it under 50 lbs you should be good to go.

So what do they do if they find that you have a board in your bag. Extra fees?

I think it mostly airline specific.

Airtran is the worst. Nickel and dime you to death. One inch over? Cha ching. One pound over? Cha ching. They keep records too. I lightened the load on the way back by repacking. Did not matter. Got nabbed on size.

American. Hit or miss. Fully expected to fork over for my golf bag but no charge. I even saw a guy picking up one of those coffin type bag that would hold a Volkswagen and he was not charged.

Now in US I ups stuff over. Less likely to lose your gear and less hassle.

it is best to make nice conversation right away with the airline worker at the desk, if you are nice they will treat you with respect! I am 4/4 on kite vacations so far. There was a good article in one of hte kite magazines about his a few months back... not sure which one though
