Just under 24 HOURS!!! Shocked until this years Bridge of The Gods Kiteboarding Festival. That's right, August 6th and 7th, 2010 are the days for this year's event. (Sunday, August 8th is a backup day in case of no wind).

Schedule:

  • Friday August 6th: Past Winners / Sponsored Riders: 12:00 PM Riders Meeting. 1:00 PM First Heat. (order to be determined at the riders meeting.) Men, Women, Masters.

  • Saturday August 7th: Amateurs: 10:00 AM Riders Meeting. 11:00 a.m. First Heat. (order to be determined at the riders meeting.) Men, Women, Juniors, Groms, Masters. 9:00 PM (or thereabouts) Photo/Video Contest review.

  • Registration is open at 9:00 a.m. both days

  • Full details here: http://www.botgkitefest.com/events.htm

Categories:

  • Groms - 11 and under
  • Juniors - 12 to 17
  • Men - 18 to 39
  • Women - 18 to 39
  • Masters - 40+

Competition format:

The last couple of years there have been questions and comments about past winners and sponsored riders competing in the event. Considering that BOTG has always been billed as an Amateur event here's what we've decided:

  • Friday, August 6th: Past BOTG Winners and Pro/Semi-Pro Team Riders, (1st Place in any previous BOTG category except Groms/Juniors)– Judged comp and trophy’s, Walking Man Growlers Twisted Evil but no cash or gear prizes. I'd love to see Joe Ruscito, Alex Fox, Reed Brady, Ben Wilson, Wally, and all of the other past winners show up for this and put on an awesome show for the crowd.

  • Saturday August 7th: Amateur Comp: Groms, Juniors, Mens, Womens, Masters: open to anyone who hasn't taken 1st place in a previous BOTG category (groms/juniors excepted - they can move up) - Cash, trophy's, trip, gear

  • In the event of no wind we'll have a SUP Relay Race open to all, thinking maybe a brand v brand team event for bragging rights (this will depend on the crowd and the temperature!)

  • Photo Contest - Best 6 photos or 1 minute slideshow highlighting both days

  • Video Contest - 4 minutes or less, capturing the spirit of the event

The Stevenson Eagles will be hosting a Beer Garden featuring Walking Man and Kona Beer. Food will be provided by Papas Dogs and El Casa De Sabor. We'll have beverages and other snacks available as well.

Prizes! Prizes! we got your Prizes!!! BOTG is looking GREAT!

Men's First Place: Vela/Dare2Fly - 7 Night Vacation for 2 at the Agualina Kite Resort in Cabarete! This place is awesome. We've been there two times and loved it.

Current gear pool to distribute:

1 kite, 4 boards, 2 harnesses, impact vest, travel bag, board bag, SeaSpecs, sweatshirts, T-shirts, hats, gift certificates, lessons, 60 DaKine backpacks and enough stickers to completely cover a full size van!

Prize info is changing daily as stuff arrives at the house and we know exactly what we have on hand. Haven't figured out the distribution yet but it will be pretty sweet.

And then there's the entry fee pool to distribute:

Calculations below based on 50 people signing up. The percentages wont change but the final dollar amount will be based on the total number of entries.

50 * $50.00 = $2,500.00 prize pool

Distribution
M1 20% $500.00
M2 15% $375.00
M3 6% $150.00
W1 15% $375.00
W2 10% $250.00
W3 6% $150.00
OG1 8% $200.00
OG2 6% $150.00
OG3 4% $100.00
J1 5% $125.00
J2 3% $75.00
J3 2% $50.00
100% $2,500.00

* Entry fee is $60 for non-CGKA members, $50 for CGKA members

See the complete list of sponsors at www.botgkitefest.com

Thanks for reading through all that and I appreciate any constructive criticism or suggestions for helping keep this one of the funnest, most awesome events in the country.

Tony

ps: I'd really appreciate it if someone could put a post on PSKite, kiteboardbc, and any of the other West Coast forums for me and link it back to here.

Constructive criticism, suggestion; Seems odd that 1st,2nd and 3rd place men should get a bigger check then the women.

Guessing that there will be more people in the one division (Mens Division) which equals more $$$$ from registration. Also a bigger group to get through should equate to more dinero Exclamation

There are more Men than Women competing (funding the prize pool) so I weighted the distribution to reflect that.

OG = Old Guys. Couldn't use M for both Mens and Masters.

Looks like camping is a problem for next weekend. The Skamania Country Fair is ramping up and they have promised the camping spots for the fair vendors and exhibitors.

Not sure what other options we have. Any ideas anyone?

Nice, I'm sure they'll feel great about being called that,
is there an OGTSKA category?
(old guys that still kick ass)

I resemble that remark! Smile Been an OG for 7 years now and I can still beat my kids in some things! Guess I always liked the Old Guys Rule t-shirts and stickers. Besides, it was kind of fun to welcome Bambam into the OG club last year.

Anyone that wants to compete in a more competitive division is welcome. Juniors into Mens/Womens, Masters into Mens/Womens, (as long as the equipment matches the classification Smile )

So, no camping and hanging out at the Fairgrounds? There is camping at Forest campgrounds up past Carson but half the fun is camping out, being close to town and the sailing site. I have a 27' trailer, so camping at a smaller site like Home Valley park would not work. Ideas?

There would still be camping at the Fairgrounds but not in the area where there are power connections?

Just and FYI about camping. Events book a year in advance or more for the Stevenson-Skamania Fairgrounds. BOTG was booked for June and since there was a sketchy wind pattern for our assigned dates in June - the event was rescheduled for the current August date - Exclusively reserving campground for BOTG is $500 a day. No exclusive sponsorship or group sponsorship this season, so that is that. Also, there was no collective effort from our kite community to say that there was interest to justify the expense.

If you are lucky enough to score a spot in Skamania...there are only 6 or 8 electrical spots - not a full hook-up (water). otherwise, There are camp spots up & down the Columbia. Viento, Memaloose, Bridge RV (across Hood River Bridge in Bingen). etc

M.

in the past we were allowed to park at the parking lot at the kite launch, where slingshot is/used to be.
is it possible to do this again or will we be chased away by the sheriff?
I would prefer to stay in the parking lot with my moho, but will head into HR if I can't find a suitable spot there.
no biggie either way, just thought I would ask.

Officially overnight camping is not allowed in the industrial zone. But, I'm in need of nighttime "security" Friday and Saturday night to keep an eye on things. Probably best if my security volunteers have some way to get out of the weather, eat, and rest between shifts. I think I'll need 4 or 5 teams to make sure everything is ok. Can't do too many but a few should be ok.
