I have 4 hours to kill at PDX between flights during normal business hours. I don't suppose that's enough time to sneak into town and scope out kite gear, is it? (I'm limited to public transport.) If so, where should I go?

I'll be driving from San Jose to Ventura CA, via Tahoe first, then back through Santa Cruz etc. Any good kitesurfing shops along the way or in Ventura?

Finally, any places to get in a quick lesson in the Ventura area? I'm looking on the "internetz" but would appreciate some intel from anyone on this forum who's been there, done that. Online wind forcast is calling for crappy with a chance of sucky. Seem to recall that this is not even the best time of year for Ventura, but there does seem to be some consistent, barely sufficient wind readings every day around 5PM.

Thanks,
LKS

gorge performance would be the spot. But as far as public transportation. You may be pressed for time - especially because once you leave the airport you got to go through security again.

We have decent public transportation. Check out the site to plan your trip: http://trimet.org/

Just punch in PDX as the start and the end is 7400 SW Macadam Ave. Portland, OR 97219

It would take you about 1.5 hours each way. Not a lot of leeway for time if you want to spend some time shopping/browsing and then getting back and sitting through security. Also, the 1.5 hours is based upon no traffic. If there is traffic - well, you can add on another 40 or 50 minutes.

Depends, when are you coming and going? You may be able to partial public transportation.

There is a light rail that leaves from the airport. You could take that one directly to downtown and then take a cab to gorge performance. The lightrail would get you much closer to gorge performance and it is fairly fast. Or maybe bum a ride from downtown - some of the members work downtown. Would be a lot cheaper to take a cab from down town (which there are plenty of cabs downtown) than from the airport.

PDX isn't so bad either, although if you wanted to go to Ikea to kill some time......

Yeah C-street in ventura is good. Stay outta the surfers way. Do not go downwind cause you will either get in their way or end up on the rocks. Best best is to go way upwind esp if you are new. Crazy dude named tom in a pickup gives lessons. Met him once. Seemed to know what he was talking about. I wanna say he is with monkey air but can't confirm. He is a bit older but laid back attitude and 818 TREE SEVEN EIGHTER-FIFTYSIX SEVENTYNINE.

Let him know Josh with the Naish Purple kite says hello and that no I haven't "upgraded" to cautions yet. Very Happy
