Mon Jul 19, 10 10:59 am Stuff to do in Hood River |
|
|
My wife and I will be coming to Hood River this Wednesday through Sunday. I am looking for suggestions for stuff for her to do during the day as hanging out on a windy beach all day is not her idea of fun. So any cool hikes, stuff to see, or any spa recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks |

You may want to travel a bit for wind and depending on your taste for conditions. Stevenson has some of the steadiest wind in the gorge and is probably top 2 riding spots in the gorge for mountains and trees (super green there); harder launch and land with little capacity and the riding is mostly chop. . . if you decide to go there, there is Carson Hot Springs just down the road--it has a Spa there. There is are also many hikes along the way; Wind Mountain, Dog Mountain etc . . .
As for Hood River proper, ask the locals. Hwy 35 has some nice day hikes that start about 20 miles away from Hood River. The old hwy on the Oregon side of the Columbia has lots of great hikes with waterfalls, but this is probably 20 miles west of HR. One of my favorites is Oneonta Gorge/Falls. Want is nice about the Oregon side of the Columbia is that it isn't as hot as the Washington side ie not as much sun. It can be 100 degrees out and 20' into the hike at Oneonta and it is 20 degrees cooler. http://www.waterfallswest.com/waterfall.php?id=129http://www.carsonhotspringresort.com/
Have a nice stay. |

Go get ice cream at the ice cream shack and read the messages on the bulletin board (if they are still there!).
Sit in the park across the street, watch it get ever so slowly darker as the air cools.
Go up the hill to that other shack for beers.
Or not....
Just memories, vintage 2000.... |

Send her shopping to downtown portland or the pearl district.... no tax for you Cal folks. You will be rewarded with a full day of kiting with no guilt. Otherwise hit the wineries in the eastern gorge such as Syncline or Maryhill. A "wrong " turn on the way could easily end you up at Rufus or Lyle . |

Bonneville Hot Springs near Stevenson Washington is super nice--25 minutes from Hood River. Maryhill Winery is really nice--40 minutes east of Hood River. A morning, or late afternoon walk/bike ride on the old Hood River to Mosier road is awesome. Eat breakfast/lunch in Mosier, then ride back.
100's of hikes ranging from forests to above tree line, and easy to difficult. Google some up before you arrive.
If you REALLY want to earn some chips take her up to Timberline Lodge for dinner. Get there by 7:30 to catch the late afternoon/early evening views.
If she likes beer send her to Double Mountain for a pint |
