Hi All ,
Well since SPI roundup Ive been wanting to try a skim board .
Today I had my first opportunity ! On this , my home built fat skim .
I used 1/2" ply after reading a few sites about doing this with foam or wood . It's 58" x 24"
Checked online stores for shapes and such decided on one and made a template .
Laid out the 4x8 sheet supported the ends wetted it with water and weighted it to get some rocker ,used my tiger torch ( big propane torch ) to quick dry repeated the process once more .
Sanded it sealed it with a poly product ( 3 coats ) used foam pads for a deck cover ( I dont know if Rasta is cool but I like some color .
After riding it I think the only reason the cutout at the back is there is to have a place to put your hand if using it as a skim ?!
I started this project friday evening and rode it today .
If I would have used the GOPro today U would puke watching cause I was flipped off many times . Laughing
The wind was 15-20 mph and I was using 11.5 Kahoona . I weigh 195 .
Once I figured how to get on and going I had to try stuff . I could move around a lot without fins , it's real slippery , but watch the balance and kite posistion or off you go .
This is a ton of fun . This sport just keeps getting better .
I don't know how to jibe and still don't Smile cause this thing works both ways , what the hell.....
It goes upwind very well and downwind it'll catch up to the kite pretty quick , like a eye watering rocket speed
There were some small waves and I could ride over them , they were up to a foot high maybe a few taller and some swells on the lake . I tried to carve off the face of the taller waves and was promptly pulled off the board as it spit out from under my feet , what a difference without those straps . I had to think of Danny from Wainman Kites , " you have to wiggle your toes to move foot posistion on the board " as he was showing us at SPI ,and it looked funny but now I have to practice the technique , thanks again and a pleasure meeting .
Had to stop BIG thunder and lightning storm hit.
Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes
I can hardly wait for the next sesh .
