Gorge kiting got it's first big blast of stoke ten years ago this week when freshly minted pros showed-up for the first kiteboarding competition at the Event Site. Twas memorable. Here's a few low res pics from a 1999 digital camera -

Kiting has sure come a long way. But wait a second......boots on a picklefork??? Was that considered wakestyle back in the day?
Also, I love the 2-line kite, sand gap, dangle shot over the sand! Pretty sweet.

To me, boots were all-about taming the unrelenting and raw power of the kite... Switched to boots in 2001 and couldn't believe how much more control it provided. Once kites developed significant depower, boots became boot-ique (i.e. for a specific app.)
That is Lou in the first pic. Here's a few more -

It's about time for board pants to make a comeback.
It would be nice to see a pro event at the Event Site again.
Maybe the jump off at KB4C this weekend can capture some of the same excitement from that first Gorge Games kite contest.

I was just thinking the other day----how fun it was back then.
Learning with equipment that was sketchy and un tested.
I miss the adventure.
Because it's not an adventure until something breaks.
It's almost too easy these days.
I will have to bust out some old photos soon for the forum.
I have a bunch.
Liquid Force pickleforks....old school.....and the first ever production kiteboard.
Gotta love their vision....sponsoring Lou, Elliot, Nina...etc.
Way back then.

I'll take a guess -- maybe Mike Fitzsimons in #3???
I think I recognize quite a few others. Darien Smith on his Mosquito and the super loud pants. Chip Wasson jumping in front of the bridge. One of the Scheibel bro's. Scary Jerry. Julie and Chris. Mark Ribkoff reelin' it in. Elliot and Lou.
That was quite the summer! What great memories. So much fun on the old two line wipika classics. Large sailboats being capsized by runaway flexi-foils. I should try to round up some pics from that season.
Boy, that one Gorge Games kite event sure did a lot to jump start the sport -- it really generated a lot of stoke. Think good thoughts, and let's hope that Peg recovers!

Kiting is always an adventure. If it's not, you're not trying to find stupid stuff to do hard enough.
