One thing I noticed is that the fishermen do not care a bit about kiteboarders.

Andy,
Just a heads up.
Not to geek out on specifics ---- but it may help everyone to know.

Commercial gillnet fisherman are only given about 5 opportunities to fish in the main part of the river each year.
Most of the time They are limited to small tributaries off the river.

I am one of those 'damn fisherman' you are mad at.
I bought a boat and picked up the opportunity to commercially fish the river about 2 years ago.

Not talking down to you...just letting you know this is a livelihood for fisherman,

Gillnetting has been going on since the mid 1800's in our river.
It's a great thing.
The salmon are a huge piece of history.

10% of all the gillnet fleet money goes to hatchery enhancement to make up for what the dams screwed up.

Just saying........the damn fisherman care.
But you are enjoying your hobby while these guys are earning a hard living.

It is almost comical that you think they should/would be sensitive to your recreational needs while they are trying to scratch out a living on the river.

I'm not trying to be aggro at all. I'm sorry if it seemed that way. BUT I don't think it's the least bit comical that those "Damn" fishermen at Stevie moved their nets into a group of 25 or so kiteboarders. It was pretty scary how fast they completely surrounded me, and the nets were not that easy to see in all the chop. Anyone who does that to me I am going to call a "Damn" something. Luckily I can dangle so the situation wasn't that bad :O) The river is there for all of us to enjoy. All I'm saying is we should all respect each other. I had never experienced that situation and I thought they were being careless. Maybe I'm completely out of line. Maybe it's a southern thing to be courteous to others.

I landscaped for 15 years and we never put someone's life at stake because we were working and they were "recreating". "Oh sorry mam that you are missing your hand. You were laying out and we needed to mow this lawn." I know you cannot really compare the two, but...

For the record I have nothing against fishermen, even Snaggle Carpus. I just don't like the fishermen that surrounded me with nets.

I'm done with this.

Andy

I hear ya Andy. I think there is a simple solution to this probelm. Just mark the nets better on each end. Bright colors and larger bouys. It would benefit all recreational users on the river.

Not sure this would ever happen but it would be nice in a perfect world.

Thanks Mike.
I should have posted a photo so everyone would understand what I meant about 'double bladed kite knife'.
Tbis knife has two blades imbedded into it's design, instead of just a blade on one side (single blade kite knives are actually very useless).

Pepi,

My beef with that knife is when using the pictured sheath you need two hands to pull it out. I need to hold the sheath down with one hand and pull the knife with the other hand, I want to be able to use one hand for removing the knife. My other hand may be occupied holding onto something or it might be wrapped in a line.

Can you pull out the knife with one hand with the sheath that comes with it or did you modify it somehow? I may be missing something obvious.

The full sequence of pictures on how to make this style pouch is on page 11 of the thread I mentioned above. There is room on most spreader bar pads for a long handled hook knife. No manufacturer makes such a pad...too bad, since it seems like the most logical place to carry something that shape.
