I had no hassles flying to SPI, golf bag was 50.5 pnds and was only charged for the checked baggage fee ($25.00) and this was with American Airlines which I always thought was one of the worst.

So I assume you flew to McAllen? All my FF miles are with American so I've done that before and that's a pretty friendly airport. Not much further than Harlingen at all (and better rental car options/prices in my experience).

I remember reading Continental's rules and they don't charge for a speed board. Now I don't know what a "speed board" is but I do know I was carrying one when she asked me what was in the bag...

lmao!!!

Actually i flew into Brownsville. I am hoping they dont charge on they way out, last year i got hit with my bag being over the 62 linear inches. had to pay up 125.00 as my flight was about to leave...they sure can put ya in a corner sometimes.

Ditto sol-flyer.
Got crunched for $100 from AA on my return flight from SPI this year. Making the situation worse; AA didn't call me back to the claims counter 'til right before my flight was taking off...lame!

On a recent trip to La Ventana we flew United down, AK back. No prob with kite gear, although we did some scrambleing to stay under 50 lb. I used NSI and buddy used another brand. Wheels on NSI were a plus, I put his bag on top when we had to drag around.

Unrelated: had a prob with my son's passport, they need to be renewed more often than adult. United was very helpfull, sent my wife and son to Seatle and then on to Cabo. No extra cost!

We chose to travel through Cabo since saving on flight cost helped pay for car we planned to rent anyway.

Curbside Check In Alaska Airlines... Just got to Maui three kites, lines, harnesses and two boards well over 50lbs in golf bag. Good to go with no questions asked and no scales.

wouldn't count on that - had a guy yesterday in Washington Dulles no curb check-in (his scale was a small pad - so you had to hold the bag vertically - I held it 49 lbs - he held it 51.4 lbs)

my words where "JUST SEND IT!"

not my typical strategy of sugary sycophantic sweetness - he glanced around for security and then sent it through...

I'm in Cabarete (no wind last 2 days!) , no problem checking in inside with Alaska at SEA, Naish golf bag right at 50 lbs. Flying American out of POP, I'm sure they're all too familiar with the "golf" bag but shouldn't be a problem.
