How many peeps are interested in a shuttle service to Lyle Point from the boat ramp? I know a retired gentleman who is looking to start a service with his motor boat, but he is wondering how many are interested?? Vote here.... |

I'm in, but being from Puget Sound I'd only use this about a dozen times a summer. Great Idea, I will pass along the information. _________________ CGKA Member

Im in, but i am also not a resident so 10 times a year might be about it.
But I would think that any weekend the wind is there the kiters will be there also, especially if there is a form of "legal" transportation. |

I would be interested when the conditions are good. Otherwsie I would stick to other spots.
I think this is a really good idea and there is enough of a demand to get there and back without getting a ticket! _________________ Still rockin gojos, *ssless chaps, and ankle weights! |

One thing that does concern me is that while I was at this place last year I noticed a homeless camp. Parking my rig with my weekend's pile of gear seemed like a bad idea, so I went back to the illegal lot. _________________ CGKA Member

Did a tax parcel search on the area highlighted by Forrest, shows up as Yakama Nation Land Enterprise. The YNLE bought this land from the Conservation for Public Lands about 3-4 years back. While they haven't closed the entire lyle point off, some members are less than friendly to non-native visitors. I've been f'd with while sup'ing from that launch. And yes, there is a homeless camp there, a large native camp especially during fishing season, and a fair reputation for car break-ins.
A better option would be to wait for the forest service to finish their new parking lot on the east side of the Klickitat for the bike trail. Hike down to the river to the north and paddle your a$$ down there.
But, I gotta ask: Is it really worth it when there are plenty of places where it is better to kite. And how come none of you ever visit Doug's? |

Did you ever windsurf Doug's in June/July/August? Barely enough room to rig a sail, and a kite would be impossible. On totally empty days it might be a launch. _________________ CGKA Member

rowena is a great place to kite! the wind is better and there is plenty of room. you can kite from west of rowena all the way down to the secret spot. I think that part of the river corridor is the most underrated stretch on the columbia! |

hey mbirch,
do you mean east end? if you were on the west end, that would take you through the main launch for the windsurfers and i think that would not be a good idea. i have often wondered about kiting here but, from my WS days, i remember it being pretty gusty. not that the rest of the gorge isn't mind you.
the launch on the east end does seam like a nice idea. above dougs but, below the WS's at rowena. i might try this instead of driving all the way to rufus this spring.

If this were Europe or Canada we'd build a tram from downtown Bingen directly to the sandbar. |
