To: U.S. West Coast, Alaska, and British Columbia coastal regions
From: NOAA/NWS/West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center
Subject: Tsunami Advisory #9 issued 02/27/2010 at 7:04AM PST

A Tsunami Advisory is in effect which includes the coastal areas of California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia and Alaska from the California-Mexico border to Attu, Alaska.

A Tsunami Advisory means that a tsunami capable of producing strong currents or waves dangerous to persons in or very near the water is imminent or expected. Significant, widespread inundation is not expected for areas under an advisory. Currents may be hazardous to swimmers, boats, and coastal structures and may continue for several hours after the initial wave arrival.

At 10:34 PM Pacific Standard Time on February 26, an earthquake with preliminary magnitude 8.8 occurred near the coast of central Chile . (Refer to the United States Geological Survey for official earthquake parameters.) This earthquake has generated a tsunami which could cause damage to coastal regions in a warning or advisory. The waves are expected to first reach La Jolla, California at 0:02 PM PST on February 27. Estimated tsunami arrival times and maps along with safety rules and other information can be found on the WCATWC web site.

A tsunami has been observed at the following sites:

Location Lat. Lon. Time Amplitude
------------------------ ----- ------ ------- -----------

Talcahuano C 36.7S 73.1W 0657UTC 1.84M/6.1 FT
San Felix Ch 26.3S 80.1W 0832UTC 0.81M/2.7 FT
Caldera Chil 27.1S 70.8W 0746UTC 0.52M/1.7 FT
Coquimbo Chi 29.9S 71.3W 0902UTC 1.27M/4.2 FT
Iquique Chil 20.2S 70.2W 0851UTC 0.30M/1.0 FT
Antofagasta 23.3S 70.4W 0956UTC 0.46M/1.5 FT
Ancud Chile 41.9S 74.3W 0943UTC 0.34M/1.1 FT
Corral Chile 39.9S 73.4W 1012UTC 1.54M/5.1 FT
Callao La Pun 12.1S 77.2W 1029UTC 0.66M/2.2 FT
Baltra Ecuad 0.4S 90.3W 1251UTC 0.35M/1.2 FT
The tsunami advisory for the U.S. west coast, British Columbia,
and Alaska indicates that strong currents are expected at the
shoreline with potentially some minor inundation. Preliminary
tsunami amplitude forecasts at select points are:
La Jolla, CA 0.7M/2.3 FT Los Angeles, CA 0.6M/2.0 FT
Mailbu, CA 0.8M/2.6 FT Pt. San Luis, CA 0.7M/2.3 FT
Half Moon Bay, CA 0.8M/2.6 FT Crescent City, CA 0.5M/1.7 FT
Port Orford, OR 0.2M/0.7 FT Morro Bay, CA 0.7M/2.2 FT
Santa Monica, CA 1.0M/3.3 FT

Time - Time of measurement.
Amp. - Tsunami amplitudes are measured relative to normal sea level. It is NOT crest-to-trough wave height. Values are given in both meters (M) and feet (FT).

Tsunamis can be dangerous waves that are not survivable. Wave heights are amplified by irregular shoreline and are difficult to forecast. Tsunamis often appear as a strong surge and may be preceded by a receding water level. Mariners in water deeper than 600 feet should not be affected by a tsunami. Wave heights will increase rapidly as water shallows. Tsunamis are a series of ocean waves which can be dangerous for several hours after the initial wave arrival. DO NOT return to evacuated areas until an all clear is given by local civil authorities.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Ewa Beach, Hawaii will issue messages for Hawaii and other areas of the Pacific outside the states and provinces listed above.

This message will be updated in 60 minutes or sooner if the situation warrants. The tsunami message will remain in effect until further notice. For further information stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio, your local TV or radio stations, or see the WCATWC web site.

From all reports it sounds like this is one of the biggest earthquakes of the century apparently. 8.0 is pretty damn big.

Chile definitely got rattled, big time.

Yeah I just talked to my friend who's family lives in Santiago (200 miles north of the epicenter). He said that there are reports of damage to a lot of the older buildings.

The local warning... http://emergency.nehalembay.org/?p=934

We're already expecting a 8ft tide at noonish to another few feet will be crazy.

Quote:

This is an official message from the Nehalem Bay Emergency Volunteer Corps about local conditions that may affect health, safety or life. We are under a Tsunami Advisory (Advisory -> Strong currents likely -> Stay away from the shore)

The beginning of the dangerous period is predicted to start at about 2:20 pm today (February 27) and end several hours later. There may be strong currents, of danger to swimmers, boaters, and beach walkers. Please stay away from the shoreline … do not go to look, as surprising waves or currents may cause unusual and sudden risk of danger.

There is no need to panic or evacuate.

Sitting out of the impact zone on Maui watching the TV. 11:30 am, the first surges appear to be happening. Cars and people all evacuated and lining the road up to where we are staying. Nothing too crazy yet but the TV just now showing the ocean surging out. Kinda cool.

OT: but I just tuned into the live CNN broadcast from Hawaii....someone was giving what sounded like a real report, but it ended with "Steve Langford's Mother is a c*nt!" I was like huh? and then a few seconds later he said it again! I guess it's an ongoing Howard Stern thing...but it was loud and clear on CNN.live.

Anyway, Arkay, you're scaring me with that 8ft high tide comment...but it looks like it's coming in on the outgoing...I hope so cause my place floods! Embarassed

So glad Hawaii skated by on this one!

The news was showing video of people walking on the beach today in Oregon... They wanted to see the Tsunami. Duh. It never ceases to amaze me just how stupid people can be. Civilization clearly saves a bunch of folks who would otherwise have died of stupidity & been removed from the gene pool long ago. Smile

mostly a non-event here on maui after all which is great
Flew in today about noon and the airport was still in lockdown not letting anyone down to the lower level... also no road traffic in or out for a while.
once I finally got a vehicle (walked to rentals to beat the mass busing frenzy) I went to Kihei to meet up w Dave and Suzy and we watched the tide move in and out exposing the reef and rocks. it happened over and over taking only a few minutes... spooky

on another note we saw so many whales full breach just off shore at sunset Thumb's Up

we awoke to the sirens at 6 am this morning. That stinkin sucked and it was a trip and a scare. we were staying in Kihei at some condos that are about 40 feet above sea level and decided not to move. we went to the store for water etc and foodland closed behind us so the locals could get home with their family. Hawaii did a sweet job with the evacuation and reporting prior, during and post the tsunami. The police and fire were very mellow and just asked you to go to higher ground. The wave/surge hit as some saw and it was not much but all were except for the few that needed to be removed from the gene pool. The reporter on one channel showed the camera of this heavy set guy wading in the surf about 30 minutes prior to impact. This was on the big island and the reporter goes look at this idiot, he is obviously not a waterman. It was classis as alot were talking about it as the day went on because it was pure honesty on the television. I cant see someone is P-town on the news having enough pelotas to say it.
Yesterday I was hoping to take some kiting in at kite beach but the wind did not fill in until 300 or so and it was on the light side. I went surfing instead which was a killer substitute. Heading back tomorrow around noon or so for another shot. I have never been to kite beach but there was no beautiful water that I have ever seen combined with the surf. what a site. stoked to head out tomorrow as it is suppose to blow 20-25 with gusts to 30. I am sure it will be an experience!!!!!

Yeah I think the guy that was out in the surf when everyone else was up high, his name was Capn' Dan. Passers by could hear him yelling, "Ocean you can't kill me I'm Capn' Dan and ain't got no legs!". I think he made his peace with God. Other than this, the Hawaii tsunami was a non event. Sposed to be good kiting tomorrow but today was a bit of a rip off.

we had a calm tsunami day. Awesome job by all the public servants to warn and get people off the water. I have not heard anyone say anything bad about it. My only concern is that we have monthly tsunami sirens, but only now did they realize that 140 of them does not work.

Both Sunday and Today the wind was kick ass with huge surf. Riding a 7.5 at Lanikai reef. Finally Yay.

9.5 helix yesterday at kite beach. It was powered up as I heard some on the beach with the 7's saying they had to fly them yet this season. Most told me they surf had been kicken this year but not the nukin winds. I was totally impressed with the guys that head outside and rip it up. the surf advisory was for 18-30 yesterday and it was pumpin. I stayed inside and was just stoked to be playin at kite beach. have so much to learn so I can come back and truely play and not get played by the waves. I am bummed I am leaving today but stoked to be coming back to oregon. will try to post a few pics when I get home tonight. well maybe tomorrow as I get in at midnight.
