Just wondering what y'all here on the forum recommend.

I had a great sesh at RR yesterday.(was staying upwind for the first time!)
But damn do my forearms hurt.
Not sure if I'm going to end up with Popeye forearms or carpal tunnel. I wear 5mil neoprene excels because they were cheap and my hands get cold easily.(bad circulation i guess). Anybody else wear thick ass gloves and eventually get used to it?

I did some searching and found people recommending dishwashing gloves and another said cut the palms out of the neoprene? Confused

What kite were you using? Bar pressure is also an issue.

Years ago we designed a glove for a company called glacier glove and it was an glove with articulating fingers. We made it for kayaking but it works for anything in the cold water. the articulation in the fingers makes it easier on the forearms over the long run. However over the long run I still dont like using any gloves becauase I like the feel even though some days are cooler than others. that is my two cents!!!

Raj, I think 5 mil is just too thick...I use 1.5 most always and they are warm enough without the forearm fatigue...
Occasionally I pull out the 3 mil, with a noticable increase in forearm pain. The other big trick to cold water sailing is to stay out of the water! Smile

Raj- I am with Wind Slither on this. I was using those Excel 5mil gloves for a while and the fatigue was awful. I went to a cheap glove ($7) from bi-mart, thin, and while at rooster on Sunday, my hands were toasty warm not fatigue. I found that I needed something that will stop the wind more than anything else.

excel 1.5 mil is what I need. My hands aren't as warm as 5 mil gloves - but they are warm enough and don't hurt.

I saw Gino rocking some mitten type gloves that have the palms missing. He said those worked well.

Whatever you get, make sure that you keep the material on your wrist reasonably loose. Any tightness on the wrist will restrict blood flow, which in turn will make your hands cold.

Thanks! All good tips.

I have a Rev and I attach the lines to the middle knot on the pigtails. Haven't tried other settings. They change bar pressure right?

Glacier gloves huh. I'll google them.

Ha! Staying out of the water would be nice. I'm almost there.....riding goofy on the launch out still feels awkward. My next achievement will be riding toeside. Don't know if I'll ever get super comfortable riding goofy.

I think I've tried all the above and last Fri. I tried some black nitrile gloves from Harbor Freight. My hands didn't get cold.

I always like the thicker lined dishwasher gloves. If those were not warm enough the dakine mittens with the hooked hands and no rubbery material in the palms are very warm and no arm pump but hard to pull on sheeting lines and such

Chanson, those Mystery gloves look like the shit! You've got some? How cold water & air temps have you tried them in? They look very flexible? what size do you wear? These gloves look like just the thing I've been looking for.

Getting used to riding goofy takes time - especially if you have spent a lot of time doing things with your right foot back and your left foot forward.

It took me a while to get acustomed to riding goofy. riding regular is still much easier for me - but riding goofy is getting much better.

The problem I had was that when I ride regular I put a lot more weight on my back leg (right leg). But when I would switch and right goofy I would still put most of my weight on my right leg - which makes the nose sink. I had to pay attention to where I was putting my weight. An exercise that helped me out was something I learned from a friend of mine who used to Box. Get into a boxing stance with your right foot forward. Then circle around and throw jabs with your right hand. Go clockwise and counter clockwise. In order for you to move around effectively you have to be able to shift most of your weight to your back leg (left leg). This gets you acustomed to moving around in a different way than you are acustomed and putting most of your weight on your back leg.

Great tip on riding goofy. I snowboard, skate, and surf so riding standard has been ingrained. I definitely don't stay upwind as well riding goofy. I will try those boxing moves. Riding one hand has helped.

ProMotion in HR has the newest Glacier Gloves designed for windsurfing/kiting/kayaking.

http://www.glacieroutdoor.com/products_water.php

Surfing gloves work fine for surfing, but you need precurved fingers to be able to grab the boom/bar/paddle without serious forearm fatigue.

It is also important to have a wetsuit that isn't too tight in the forearms.
Most surfing wetsuits are cut snug in the forearms, but windsurfing/kiting suits are usually looser.
