Mon Feb 22, 10 6:11 pm recommendation for good twin tip board for Gorge? |
|
|
Looking to upgrade from my 3 year old Naish Haze. I'm after good all-around board that carves well in swell during summer Westerlies, tacts upwind well (especially during fall / spring Easterlies), has good pop (but w/ some softness on landing), maybe somewhere in the 132~138 range (I'm about 165lbs). Good footbed a plus. Would be used in 17~20+ knots....recommendations? |

Really like my 09 Naish SOL 134, at 170lbs it fills those specs well. Surfy feel in the swell yet still edges good with decent pop and good upwind as well as good low end. Excellent all around board. I demo'd several boards before settling on it for my all purpose board |

For the Gorge, and a surfy feel, I find that 134--143 x 39--41, and a soft to medium flex is great. I ride a 143 x 40 with med flex and love it at 195 lbs. Fins make a big difference too. I really like the "surf" fins on the 2009/10 Slingshot SX's, and the North X-rides. I ride a 143 SX, and look for swell to play on, rather than flatter water for popping. |

LF Recoil is money. Been using that board for a couple of seasons. Really good balanced board. _________________ Still rockin gojos, *ssless chaps, and ankle weights! |

I've only been able to ride the Lunacys a few times but they're definitely a sweet board, very responsive. You can't go wrong with demoing a few boards from different companies though. _________________ BIP- "YOUR GIRLFRIENDS FAVORITE" |

Yeah Drock hit it on the head....Hood River has a huge concentration of kite companies and every one of them will hook up a demo. Try em all for yourself....no one board works for every rider. |

For me, ditto what Eric said. I switched from an SX 136 to an X-Ride 135 and they're both great for swell, X-Ride a bit friendlier in chop. Lots of people like the Mako for the same use. If you're looking for wake style with huge pop I don't think these are the boards for you though. For carving (sans directional) and bump and jump they're great. |

The SX has nice soft shape and short fins which make it puuuuurfect for the gorge. I put some of the NSI double stuff pads on it and my feet are really happy.
It's a great board for the gorge.
You really should demo a ton of boards before you buy. However, if you really wanna blow some money and need a board get a used board. PM me and I may be able to hook you up.

DEFINATELY DEMO
As was said every rider is different, some of the boards mentioned above did not work well for me, good boards in their own right just not all necesarily a good fit for all around board IMHO

Fer ser - demoing is most important. Different riders have different needs/preferences. There are people recommending a board on this thread that I used and did not like at all - simply didn't have enough float - I'm 185 and used a 137. Switched boards but kept with the same size (137) and my new board has a lot more float and is much easier to land tricks and stay afloat in the lulls. Demo man. _________________ Still rockin gojos, *ssless chaps, and ankle weights! |

the jimmy lewis model III or there new more poppy model is also a board that has the characteristics your looking for. I should add however that I'm not sure they make a board that does all the things you want it to well. There are boards that pop exceptionally well (square profile) and their are boards designed to "carve swell" (more roundish profile) but finding a board that does both may prove difficult.
truth be told, carving swell on a twin tip is kind of analogous to using a butter knife to cut steak. You may want to get on a surfboard (a STRAPLESS SURFBOARD) when your out demoing all those boards.
PM me and you can take my SS surf out.
Cheers,
