Solution??

Attach an anchor to a bouy. Attach a line to the bouy with a caribeaner at the end. Throw bouy and anchor in water 50 feet off shore. Attach your CL to caribeaner and swim kite out to launch position. Swim back to bouy, hook in CL and there you go. Land in reverse.

Or, place bouy far enough offshoe that you can leave your kite on shore and swim your bar out to caribeaner.

I have done this when I take my kayak out to remote spots with no shoreline.

IDK.....

I would love to watch someone attempt this. You'll be so cold and exhausted from trying to fight the current and wind for 50 feet x the two trips out and back that you'll probably just take up the lawn chair next to mine. No worries... I'll have an extra PBR for ya for the effort. Thumb's Up

Even if it did work, most days you won't have steady enough wind on the inside for a static point launch anyways.

I'm not trying to hate, I think everyone here that knows is just trying to convey the fact that it's a gnarly launch. I've self launched a lot of places in the Gorge, and few make me more nervous than Stevenson.

Like it's already been stated, best bet is to either bring a buddy, wait for someone on the water to come in or pull up in the parking lot. Some spots just aren't worth taking the risk for a solo session if you're not 100% confident and experienced in what you're trying to do.

OK. Sounds pretty bad. But let me ask this. When mbirch arrived, there were several kiters out and then mbirch left.

That means noone left on shore. At some point, one of those kiters came in and they were most likely all alone. How did they land. How did the last kiter out launch.

I get it.its a knarly launch. But it looks like someone did something and would be interesting to hear what they did.

Self landing at Stevie is not as difficult as trying to self launch. You have two options:

1. Come up on shore then drop the kite in the water and reel it in.
2. Drop the kite on the bike path or the grass patch on the other side of the path at the east end if it's not too windy.

Option 2 means you have to be pretty experienced at landing at Stevie so you know where your kite is going to end up as you can't see either of those spots from the water. Works fine at the end of the day when everything is dropping off. Only tried this on westerlies, never easterlies.

I've been first in on downwinders from Home Valley and I come in upstream/upwind of the big rock and dump my kite in the water then pull it in quickly before it goes around the rock.

I have self launch and self landed there more times that I can count over the years. Better have your drift launch nailed and be prepared to fire your release system the second things go funky.

Personally, Stevenson is by far my favorite place to kite in the western gorge and rather than drive to Rooster, I just perfected my self launch and landing methods there. But, note... in east winds both self launch and landing become very dangerous... if not impossible.
