Anyone know how to self launch at Stevenson east point! A few people were out and I was left standing on the beach. I did not have the guts to try a self launch so I had to make the drive to rooster. Any thoughts

there is no self launch there.
Very experienced people have been busted up and broken at that launch when launching with the help from a friend.

The water right outside that big rock has some funky currents. If you look to the east you will see some racks for boats or whatever they are. That is what creates the flat water by the launch. But it also makes for funky currents. Drift launching would be more complicated.
Like monkey said - experienced people have been busted up by that launch. That launch keeps most people away - injuries to people and to kites happen regularly. It sucks - but it just is what it is.

OH WOW!! why didn't we think of that?
yeah dude, drift launch there for sure. That's completely safe, just stay upwind of the large rock.

Monkey is our resident smart ass. I wouldn't pay too much attention.
But yes, we have thought about drift launching. The current and wind aren't that clean at the launch and like monkey pointed out - you got that big rock, not a lot of forgiveness in that thing.

I'm pretty sure I saw Monkey's current icon peeking out of the bushes at Rooster last season.

It can be done on Westerlies, but you're taking a chance & better know what you're doing. If you have to ask, you shouldn't try it.
I wouldn't try it at all on Easterlies. But maybe that's just me.

OK I have never been there and probably dont know shit about your conditions.
Just a thought/question. Your currents run east and your winds west to the most part...or at least in the opposite direction of the current when you kite at a spot.
Can you tie a rope to a fixed object on land, hook your CL to it and swim your kite out and set into launch position at edge of wind window in the water. Would the wind opposite the current hold it in place?
Google map of the spot?

Krazed, hard to explain but the launch at Stevenson really isn't a launch, its really the side of a hill...a steep one. You could drift launch there and it has been done but probably best to use the traditional drift launch instead of swimming your kite out.
FYI. the currents flow west here (all rivers drain to the ocean) and our predominant winds are from the west. (so yeah, wind and current are opposite).

stevie is just not the place F around....shit happens to the best of them there..much less, the one, trying to figure it out well after the best around have been there for years......heed the advice...use others experience and expertise to not end up wondering and hating the fact that you did not...it would suck to be that guy...but we will talk about you

Also the current is f'd up at the launch because of some boat launch obstructing the normal flow of the water.
one time on a westerly wind day my kite went down near the launch and started drifting upwind (with the current - against the wind). I'm like sh*t - please don't turn around kite - cus I'm screwed - it would have come right back at me and possibly wrapped me up in my own lines. Spike was there to help drag me to the rocks - I needed help cus i was getting pulled upwind by my kite.

I would bet by the time you pumped up, rigged your kite and put on your wetsuit that one of people on the water would be coming in... You could give them a catch and they could give you a launch. Either that or someone else would pull up to ride as you were pumping up. Almost certainly by the time you drove to rooster and rigged up, someone could have launched you at Stevenson.
The best advice I have for that spot is take your time and don't be in to much of a rush, because there is no room for error on the launch.

Solution??
Attach an anchor to a bouy. Attach a line to the bouy with a caribeaner at the end. Throw bouy and anchor in water 50 feet off shore. Attach your CL to caribeaner and swim kite out to launch position. Swim back to bouy, hook in CL and there you go. Land in reverse.
Or, place bouy far enough offshoe that you can leave your kite on shore and swim your bar out to caribeaner.
I have done this when I take my kayak out to remote spots with no shoreline.
IDK.....

could be exciting in 5kts of current and 30+ wind (did we mention a shoreline of rocks)
Monkey's approach doesn't seem that bad...
