At least you have a make-shift Pro Bar, Bard...
I'm not sure where you're getting that $150 number from, but whatevs. Can't remember what JP paid for his new SS bar back in '03, but all of the late model Direct Drive bars have been up there.

And as I said, most people are getting them with their kite packages, so who gives a shit what they cost when purchased alone (unless you can only afford a bar). Thumb's Up

Starting At $1550 for a 5m "package" (kite/bar) you should at least be getting a board with that as well

Exactly the reason I havent bought a new kite since my first one....jut wait untill the new years model comes out and shop around. Usually can find a like new kite for 40%- 60% of retail

Example...bought a 2009 model 7.5m last year used just a few times for $500 with bar (about 50% of retail) and it is my favorite kite Very Happy

BS

Demo kites and you will find there are a lot of good kites for a lot less, especially if you buy slightly used or end of season closeout

- Spike makes a good point about the used market being huge ... for most people there's no need to buy this year's kite.

- Are slingshot bars steel tubing?? I thought they were carbon. The Best bars are carbon - I know because the end ripped off mine a couple months ago!

looks like you get a good-as-new 2008 REV if you pay $450, why would you pay ~ $1,600 for a nearly identical 2010 kite?!

Totally agree Spike.....a lot of good quality used gear that will give you a 3-kite quiver for the price of 1. Smart way to go to get your fix in this economy.

The new SS bar is quite different from previous, mainly the transition from pull to push quick release. My Royal bar has push safety and when I'm in the washing machine it's really easy for me to find it so I really want that new SS bar. One less experience of "freak out" factor to me is worth gold and some of you know EXACTLY what I'm talking about.

Also, SS knows us cheap ass kiters will buy that new bar for our 08 Revs thinking we are saving $1100. It's smart product pricing silently pushing us towards the new kite. I'm going to upgrade my primary kite at least every year or two so I am just glad we haven't seen the $2k "New kite" world yet.....but I'm sure it's coming which will make the used market stronger.

We probably all lose about $600 a year in value for your kite.....but considering how many of us ride the shit out em and they don't break.....it's cheap year-round entertainment compared to lift tickets, wakeboard boat gas, downhill MTB etc.

Everybody who thinks the pricing is unfair, or price gouging.....go buy your $5 piece of tubing and have at it in your garage..... and never forget when you're swimming in with broken shit time is money so you name it.....ass, gas or grass nobody rides for free.

Just priced a new Octane and it was $1800!! Cab has kites for 2100! I am supposed to drop $6000 a quiver every year for the latest tiny ass improvements? In 5 years that's $30,000. That would at least buy a nice boat. Good luck with that. Its a recession remember?

When you buy these kites the used market gets more expensive as buyers try to recoup thier cost. It sucks all around.

Well, I won't begrudge anyone boobs. That would be cruel.

When I said $150 though what I meant was I remembered seeing slingshot (and others) bars a few years ago for $350, $150 less than the new $500 price point. And I don't mean to pick on SS really, they rock but IMO overprice their bars as bad as anyone. Again, just my opinion there....

As far as amortizing costs, all the companies definitely could lengthen their design cycle a bit. They would have time for validation and proper beta testing, as well as amortization benefits.
With the amount of teething problems we still see, from exploding LE's to snapping surfboards to bad bridle tuning, corrosion, occasional "bad" years for kites, etc., it seems like the whole industry just runs a bit ahead of itself.
It ain't 1999 anymore.

I might bitch about value for money (as I see it) of some gear, but again, the situation we have -pricy but sometimes mundane gear- is a lot better than cheap gear that fails rapidly. So I am not hating the industry. Or everybody's fave NW kite co.
Anyway thats probably all I should say about that...

$500 for a bar = not so good.

Boobs = good.

Hopefully we can all agree!

Im not saying its a rip off.

What I have noticed is that the typical range for a bar price is between $350-400.
I really wanted this bar but like I said was surprised.

I typicaly buy kite only and use existing bars. With the number of kites most of us have in a quiver its not really necessary to have a bar with each kite...meaning I dont buy complete kite packages everytime I replace equipment.

Maybe by end of year this will be marked down to make room for the next year version IDK. Ill keep an eye out. I really do like the bar and have heard good things about it.

Understand there's already been a recall on the 2010 (10th Anniversary) Tangle Bar. The small red loop (pictured center/bottom) requires a rubber band retro fit as an extension...

I"ve been using the "Tangle bar" (Longhorn) for 7 years
still the best design most ergonomic bar to date I've tried
pully bar , sheetable, all carbon, floats and lightweight, oblong bar fits my hands well, I just bought a smaller one .,,
maybe 3 yrs. ago I think it was less than $200.

Recently retired them for the bars that come with the Diablos
The 2010 bar from Ocean Rodeo looks very promising ,I will be giving that a try
