Sure! Why not? Plenty of guys do it....thats like saying a guy is gonna go out and buy a skimboard and have to ride it strapped the first day.
The east coast is way different from the West coast. The ocean can have really flat days on the east coast making it easy to learn strapless where the west coast always has some decent sized swell making it a lot tougher to get it dialed. |

the celeritas is a fun board, I would say best used in small/choppy surf _________________ BIP- "YOUR GIRLFRIENDS FAVORITE" |

yes but it wasn't new - got it for $50 at a swap meet
(Kraemer and i met some San Diego surfer kids - they came to Hood River and learned how to kite on strapless surfboards in three days - your experience may vary...) _________________ Go Deep!

So, that's interesting. Tell me your progression to strapless in the ocean.
1. learn to kite
2. buy a $700 board
3. go into water
4. lose board
5. repeat
I'm just saying that if you buy a board and it has strap insets you may want to use them.
Now, if you are such a great surfer that you are able to skip the strap progression, then cool, but most people don't do that.
Look past who I am, bulae99, or Ron, think about the logic of telling someone to buy a board and go out into Ocean first time on a Surfboard and do strapless.
Whatever works for ya, it's cool!!
My first time strapless was after tons of practice on a board I bought for $50 bucks as well. Rob hooked me up with an old directinal RRD, tons of rocker. I kept the straps on and learned to perfect my toe side stuff, loops, and kite control.
Then, with straps on, I went out at event site, or just above it in the flat water there and practiced getting on it without using straps. It was hard to do for me, but I practiced and finally got it.
Then I bought an SST and started with the straps again. The straps were not in the perfect spot, but they worked. Took off my straps and then it was on!!!!
I was hooked. The freedom of no straps was groovy. _________________ Hey, I'm being hahahahahrassed! |

no - i'm saying if you are a great surfer you could skip the twintip entirely and learn on a strapless surfboard
but the real key to strapless riding is becoming a great body dragger |

loseing a board is deffinitly a consideration when going strapless. It depends mostly on where you ride. If you ride in areas where the board can wash onto rocks or their are strong rips you may want to ride strapped or use a leash (not for beginers) but if you start out in an area where the board always washes in and the surf is small strapless is a way to start but you do need enough kite controll to not get liffted off the board. |
