Rooster has lots of windy days Feb/ Mar ! Very Happy OK, seriously though... Lots of good ideas here. Don't be afraid to check out exotic locales too. Airfare is the biggest cost, accommodations can be dirt cheap. Keep on eye open for special deals on airfare, you might be able to score cheap tickets if you regularly check airline websites for deals.

Im in pdx now, but feb/march-june/july then sept/oct/nov. Sometimes a warm front will heat the place up in the middle of winter also. It is nice and steady wind, but can switch offshore when the dust devils start forming on the hill.
Jet skis, mexican gangs, mexicans, and mexican americans dominate the main kite beach on the weekends. During the week, you got the place to yourself.

Warm cheap and totally safe
The Reef kite boarding in StLucia West Indies
the airport is the reefs backyard and the lite beach is the front yard
ten minutes from the time you get off the plane and your kiting
60$/ngt incl brkfst (Mar/09 )
my wife doesn't kite and enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and friendly people
Vieux Fort (town) is a 5-10 min walk , she did it alone with no hassles what so ever . Dont even need wheels really. I rented one for a day to see the rest of the island.
no one trying to sell you tshirts or any other junk just regular life going on
Very basic accom. At the Reef or there is a resort style place down the road if you prefer. The reef has kite storage for those who stay there and those who stay elsewhere too
good luck
Jack
ps
they speak English and no thieves or banditos to worry about , very safe.

She had a blast and is going back. I'm counting the days until we go.

PDX/HR - What day is it?

PostSat Dec 26, 09 12:16 pm    vote for Maui Reply with quote

Hiya... Some pretty inexpensive flights from PDX to OGG (Maui) in Jan/Feb right now... might have to fly on non-weekend days (e.g. leave on a Thurs, return on a Tues)...but last I checked you could do it for ~ $260 per person in Jan and ~ $290 in Feb.

There is lots to do for non-kiting spouses and non-wind days on Maui. Beach by Kanaha park kite launch is quite lovely to just lay out on.

SPI - wind, waves, flats, great downwinders. One of the best seasons in SPI is March and April. Feb is blowing everyday but you could get a cold front still. You'll probably want to avoid the week of March 15-19 this year as its a little crazy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRNEO9c4Hr0

Maui is a lot prettier but the cost once you get there is high for everything.
