Looked like a ton of fun. The water coming off the top then freezing to everything was very cool.
My legs are Sore from climbing up to where you started and back down with out sliding off the trail and breaking my other shoulder!

Haha, looks sweet. What's with all the pointy metal? You guys too chicken to use your appendages?
PS While you were climbing we found a secret mt. biking trail. Sounds like today was a success. _________________ The Slider Project, LLC

some video from the new gopro hd (ice climbing is pretty slow until a pillar collapses or you fly off...)

a few more pics:
Monkey setting the anchors
Monkey climb
Forrest killing it - which a good thing cause if he slips he is flying 40ft with lots of spikey things attached...

So monkeyboy, did you climb up the side first and then over to set the anchors? Or did you did you climb up setting as you went? How many anchor points did you guys set?
Gman, that video is sweet! The GoPro definitely gives a good 1st person experience. Is that with or without the waterproof casing around it (cause the sound is pretty good)? |

yeah, I climbed up a little gully. It was fairly easy but still alittle sketchy as it was all this frozen over roots and what not and I wasn't really sure what could hold me. Once on top there was a sloping shelf to stand on to set the anchors. I have to say though that the combination of my 10 year hiatus from ice climbing and the soft ice made delaing with the anchors fairly stressfull. The anchor consisted of three equlized screws. If you look at the video at 3:37 you can see the top to screws are equilized with a "magic X" sling arrangement. These screws are then equalized by another magic X sling on the upper most screw. The forth screw (farthest) is just backing up that top screw as there was a fair amount of stress cracks eminating from the top screw.
I forgot how much of a pain in the ass working with ice is. Everything is slippery as fuck, you fumble around with gloves, the webbing gets all frozen, and you have sharp axes dangling from your wrists.
The video turned out great though!! you can really get a feel for the steepness that the photos don't do justice to.
More ice fun on Thursday? |
