Mexico has clearly changed for the worse.

Are you sure about this..... Confused Confused Confused Confused

Rolling Eyes

I have spent quite a bit of time down there and really like Mexico and the Mexican culture

I am not one to come to these conclusions after hearing a few horror stories. There has always been corruption and crime in Mexico, but, the border towns are more dangerous than they have ever been and I think criminals are more brazen than the in the past.

To answer your question...No, I am not sure, but, there appears to be a trend over the past thirty years indicating increased violence towards tourist.

I have never been to Baja, but understand it to be over run with corruption.

I was pulled over 4 times on my last trip in northern mainland mex. Once was my fault as I pulled down a one way street (unknowingly) to ask directions (from a cop) to mayto as I drove 3 hours the night before and ended up in chimo. He got my info, wrote a ticket with no fine, had me sign it and then crumbled it up. WTF? 2 of the other three i believe were cops looking for a bribe, but once they got to my window, they started talking to Levi and walked away without even talking to me. The other, they were looking for someone in a similar truck.

All in all, I think Mexico is great. We had a nice evening in San Marcos, about an hour south of Acapulco. We met a few people who had lived in the US before and spoke about as much English as I do espanol. We played around in the crowded plaza. ate dinner, and now Levi is sawing logs.

Even if you think you know a given area, anything can happen. almost all desert areas are generally poor, and thus more problems. further south near large cities there are more jobs and are relatively safe.

My problem arose near Culiacan, Sinaloa. As David stereotyped, they appeared to be teenage or low 20's. I was off to a late start and thought since I had been there twice before, that there wasn't much to worry about. I was pulling up to a hotel well after dark and was suddenly looking at a couple guns. I knew I was fucked if I stopped, so was gonna make them work for it. Luckily they were in a little crappy car so I had a size and speed advantage. If they had the balls to fire, things may have been much different, though I think they realized I could crush them at any moment, but I wanted to get away with minimal damage if possible. I don't think they wanted to hurt anyone, just a paycheck. Others may not care if they kill someone for a few bucks.

I'm just glad we got away. I am afraid of the dark now. I almost freaked out today around 5:30 when a Taxi was acting weard behind me. I didn't know it was a taxi until they passed me, but he was driving crazy like the banditos and semi-expected to see guns as they passed.

Just like Monkeyboy, Don't stop for anything. If you give in you're fucked. Make them work hard to fuck you.

I would love to hear the story as well. I have told my horrific baja story but two other events in Baja may also convince people to not drive at night and stay out of remote locations that are close to cities and towns.

PDX you gotta link to that story? I missed that one apparently.

I've never had a problem down there. I've actually felt really safe, but I guess you are safe until you are not. I drove the San Antonio highway in the middle of the night (2am) before it was paved with my mom, sister, and wife. Probably was a terrible idea. I don't think I will ever do that again.

I've had a knife pulled on me back in Bama in a bad neighborhood and now know that you never stop for anyone you don't know. Funny thing is I knew one of the kids that I stopped for that day, and his friends jacked me. They asked me if I had a light and since I knew one of the kids I said sure. I handed them the car lighter, they lit a cig then as they were passing me back the lighter they held a knife to my throat and took the keys out of the ignition. The kids literally took the shirts off our backs and shoes off our feet along with our alcohol we just scored. I was probably 16, 17.
Unfortunately I don't think you can trust anyone anywhere anymore.

Haha well Don't take that out of context. I was being a little dramatic. I really meant when you are in unfamiliar territory. But it seems like you do have to always watch your back these days.

I do think if you are fairly good at judging people's character there are plenty of good people around that you can trust.

Hell a service man came to my house the other day and fixed my furnace for free. Hell I'll give them a plug.
Rose Heating. The guy's name is Dave. If you need some work done I trust that guy.

Hearing the recent story seriously made my palms sweat. It is funny how events like this are burned into your memory forever. I can still recall with absolute clarity the very bad day I Baja over a decade ago.

If the shit goes down, keep your wits about you.

anywho..here is the link.

A report to gain country insight at a high-level but it's old data and reported murder vs actual when comparing 1st world and 3rd world countries is difficult to segregate based on police and government variances.

What's interesting to me about this thread is the guys that have had Mexico issues either in the past or present I actually know so it's a high percentage of life threatening problems coming from a small group. It doesn't bode well for traveling through Mexico.

Be safe and maybe spending a few extra bucks might be as valuable as gold when traveling down south.

Those stats are old, but most stats are. Our boarder with Mexico is a problem that we have created. Our insatiable appetite for drugs combined excess of military grade weapons has created a unique black market.

The cartels supply the meth, and we supply the weapons.

Dude, we should just supply the meth and keep the guns... They'd be f@#ked with no way to kill us!

Thanks for reposting groundclown.

I drove at night in Baja California Sur (mostly around La Paz). Camped out on a remote beach with no security near Todos Santos.

I talked to plenty of local gringos who said it was all bueno. Only crime around there was the $20 traffic stop from the local cops.

Again, this is BCS, well away from the border and well away form the mainland. Maybe BCS is now dicey as well? Maybe it was dicey then and I was just dumb + lucky?

Good luck with rest of your travels groundclown.
