Tue Oct 13, 09 10:25 am Cottonwood - Camas downwinder? |
|
|
Yeah, I know it's a little chilly. But the smallest kite I've been on in over two weeks was a 13m It's only going to get colder! Gusting to 60 at RR, , so maybe the Cottonwood - Camas thing will work today.
Anyone up for it?

Yes it was. Holy shit is all I have to say! Gman & I checked out Camas, looked good. Whitecaps the whole section of river so the downwinder looked good. Gman gets out in front of me & I watch his kite go down multiple times in the channel. With a barge coming. He gets going & clear of the barge and I'm thinking "shit". Oh well, it has to get better further down right? Not too bad at first, like 10 G 35... Yes, that was the good part. Then it's like 0 g 35. Kite in the water multiple times. Finally the wind just gives out. Barely enough to self rescue. Gman washes up on the Oregon side & I head for Washington. Then the wind picks back up to 30 & Gman relaunches & heads to Camas. I washed up in front of some houses & a really nice older guy comes down to check that I'm OK. He ends up giving me a lift down to the Camas launch. (My lines are a mess...)

Glad you guys are ok. Good thing the water temps are still warmer than the typical chaotic east wind days during late fall and early spring.
An old poker saying, "Pigs eat, hogs get slaughtered". Translation: Gman, should of quit while your where ahead. Again, glad no one was hurt, just tangled lines.

A chazer bleibt a chazer
it wasn't a total suckfest - quite a few highlights:
1. Not getting run down by a barge
2. Discovering the thermal properties of an Acrylic hat under the helmut (forgot my hoodie)
3. Running over a fat sealion - Camas Sealion (better than turtles) - scared the living shit out of me
4. Watching Nak get to the WA shore
5. Full spectrum kiting 0 to 40 - 6m RPM Rocks!

Forgot to mention the sea lion! I didn't see him, but heard him right behind me while self rescuing. I'm like "WTF was that!?!?" Scared the crap out of me. Pretty cool day all in all. BTW, definitely drysuit season again.

Glad you guys made it back. Sounds like point sailing at Camas woulda been more enjoyable. I think wind is just too East a lot of the time to fill in well into that section of the river which heads North a bit. Probably needs a bit of South in the wind to work well.

It has to be totally nuked out at RR to do the CW - C downwinder. I think Gene hit it on the head, needs to be more south in the wind. Gman & I eyeballed the river at various points, the downwinder looked doable. Sometimes, you ride the river, sometimes the river rides you. Still a lot more fun than sitting at home...
Point sailing Camas or hitting the mouth of the Sandy would have been the call. Or better yet, Camas - PDX downwinder might have worked.
