Apparently I am very confused because I have not purchased fuel at anything but a Pemex ever over the last 30 years. So I suppose the easy solution here would be to avoid these mystery fuel stations you're referring to that are not Pemex, and might have tainted fuel.

This is just crazy talk. Pemex is like Petrol Mexicana, Its socialized, standardized, and regulated. Every station in Mexico is a Pemex.. A liter is the same no matter where you are (kind of nice, yes?) 20 years ago there might not a have been a Pemex, between TJ and KM 55, but now, after huge land grabs over the past 10 years, there are stations every few kilometers.. The only exception is the Catavina desert.
