Today Steve Williams (aka Mocean on NWKite.com) gave into his battle with brain cancer and passed away. He was my best friend and windsurfing and then kiteboarding partner for the last 25 years. He was a loving husband and father of 2 boys, an incredible waterman with his relationship with the ocean as a surfer, sailor, kiter and beach protector. He worked for State Parks and Beaches and then State Land Division protecting the beaches from unwanted and unnecessary development. He was my hero!
He had been battling the disease for 4 years and never dropped his good attitude for living life and wanting to share good times with family and friends. I can remember many a day where we would met up for a kiteboarding session at the beach and he had just come from a chemo treatment at the hospital. He would be charging the surf and just shredding the place with an ear to ear grin and cancer was the last thing on his mind. He would tell me afterwards that kiteboarding was the best therapy because cancer could not reach him when he was powered by the wind and riding waves.
This last summer he was too sick to kite and for me it was just not quite the same knowing that he was suffering at home with that insideous disease. Now, that he has ascended out of his body I feel Steve in a new and way different way. He will be out there in a bigger and better way since he is out of physical form. I will miss my best friend, but I know he is in a better place now.
Many of you knew Stevo through his hundreds of posting in this forum. I am sure that his words struck meaning and emotions with you too. He will be missed, but certainly not forgotten...

Very sad. I didn't know Steve in person but he was a great forum contributor and always nice and informative when I asked him questions over PM. I feel sorry I didn't get to know him. I remember him posting about his condition a couple of years ago, its sad that he didn't make it.
Some of his words about riding on the coast I still think of every time I am out there.
Rest in peace Steve.

I had the pleasure of meeting and kiting with Mocean at South Beach on a late August or early Sept nuker of a day in '06. There was just three of us out that day. Perhaps I met Windian as well? Steve was full of talk and facts that day and was excited to get out there. All I can really remember was a tall gentleman with a big smile rigging his smallest kite. Good way to remember him for sure.
My condolences go out to his family and friends.

So sorry to hear about your best friend.
Every time I hear about this type of tragedy, I think to my self, you just never know what will happen. Live your life to its fullest each and every day.....like it’s your last day on earth.
RIP Steve.

Agreed... very touching post. He looks familiar and I may have met him years ago while living in Corvallis and windsurfing in Newport. I'm so sorry to hear of your loss; it's hard when that brutal disease advances and our friends don't resemble the strong, capable people we built respect and friendship with. My condolences to Steve's family and friends; thanks for your tribute.
Twin-fin, I like your advice.

This post put me in a very solemn spirit. A close co-worker of mine battled cancer this past year and it looks like he made it through - he will go back for a check up in four months to make sure its all gone. But I was getting a play by play update as to what was going on with him - so it has been very close to me and on my mind this past year.
It also hit me because I bought Steve's 08 Rev. I assumed he was selling it because he wanted to get the 09s. I didn't know he was selling it because he was too sick to kite that just sucks. I received the kite in the mail and it looked like it may have been used four or five times - just seemed kind of odd he would sell such a sweet kite and not have it used very much. I actually have the kite sitting next to me right now.
Rest in peace Steve - I hope you are in a better place.

| Truly a sad day. My oldest sister passed away of the same ailment... I regret not having met Steve, though I felt a kinship regardless. My most heartfelt condolences to all of Steve's friends and family. May you have steady winds on this next journey Steve.

Steve will always be the Newport local in my mind. He always was a friendly happy guy.
I think maybe some kind of plaque on the Jetty or something to eternalize his stoke and to allow his memory to watch over all who sail from the jetty south for years to come.
My thoughts to his family .. let us know if there is anything they need.
RIP Steve.
