Tue Aug 18, 09 8:16 pm How about a good ol' fashioned gear question? |
|
|
Keep in mind I'm a newb. I am running a Naish 2:1-1:1 bar in the 1:1 setting. Other than that, everything is in "stock" positions. My question is I am fighting with my leash being so close to the bar. I have flown other kite/bar combinations, but that hasnt been an issue. Now it is with the Naish setup. Is there somewhere else I can connect the leash and still be safe? See pic for details. Thanks.[/img]

Yeah, it's a pain in the ass. you could hook up your leash suicide style, but there's a reason they call it that. Other than that you could upgrade to a bar with a through the bar centerline safety. Bear in mind if you use a brand other than Naish, you'll need to modify it to match the depower throw of the Naish bar.

Hmmm, could you run a line down from that attachment point through the center of your bar handle? Never tried it - but I don't see why it wouldn't work.

| The line connections won't pass through the bar, so the kite won't flag. I tried to figure out how to make this work without getting the fittings from a manufacturer, but I couldn't figure a reasonable way of doing it. If somebody can figure a way, I'd love to see it.

| ...me too! It's OK, but I have been using other rigs where I can keep it way out of the way, not near the bar like it is with my older Naish setup. I would prefer that. Maybe someone from Naish will comment??

| I think SS handle pass leash would give you some more length / slack.

Mabey I can help. I ride the same system. I know its not the wright way to do it, but I clip to the inside (toward the kiter) infront of the chicken loop. Once again, no expert, but have a degree in crashing. Hasn't been a problem and the ejection handle has always worked. Just a thought.

I did this on my Naish bars at first and it worked well (i added about 4"). What have done recently was pick up a thiner line and attached it to the ring where you are attaching the leash to, ran it down the center line and through the bar. Attached a larger ring to that line so it will not go through the bar and clip to that ring. Upgraded to be like the newer systems with all of the depower of the original set up. The only pain in the ass is when you start looping your kite, the center line and safty line with twist. If you want to spend a little cash you can buy the red center line and ring at any kite store.
Good luck.
PS you might even want to upgrade your center line to the smart loop and get rid of those depower straps that are so high.

Hey MS!
Could you post a pic of what you did? I know the later Naish bars have a fitting that can optionally feed through the bar like that, but when I played with a bar like Mike's, I couldn't get a connection that would feed through the bar while under tension? (Like in a worst case release.) I'm very interested to see how you solved the problem.
Thanks!

| Any chance you could post a close up of the top ring? I see that's a smart loop, just wondering if that's a newer Naish setup. I think the '09 bar has a fitting that would feed through the bar? Looking at MikeInHR's photo, that ring is an older one & won't feed through the bar.

Yeah... it looks to me like it has the "Smartloop" setup, with the depower adjustment on the chicken loop, which I dont have. If I kept my adjustable depower lines they way it is in my pics, can I simply extend the line, from the center line ring, through the bar, to a new ring, as was alluded to? Not a whole lot of experience, hence the questions.

Quick check: See if that safety line will fit through the center hole in the bar. (The front line to the kite, not the leash.) If it does, you can set up a through the bar safety. It needs to fit through easily...

I'll do so. If so, just extend the same extended line through, with a ring?
