Tue Aug 04, 09 6:35 am SI went off good last nite |
|
|
SI was blasting mid to upper teens last nite at least till dark. It started to blow about 6:30pm, got gusty and onshore, but it just kept picking up. One of the best PM sessions in the last couple weeks.
It was nice to kite with just Eli and I sharing the whole river.
Have I mentioned before that the usairnet forecasts are not good predictors for SI? I think usairnet was calling for about 6mph the last couple of nights.
The recent pattern has been that it turns on late and just keeps getting better with time.
Tides will be bad early for the rest of the week. _________________ Lets FLY |

Way to score guys.
The usairnet forecasts are a good starting point tough. If they forecast wind in teens, it usually blows.
For a low wind forecast there is nothing more to do than to watch sky cover and Kelso Portland pressure gradient. No clouds is good, gradient of .05 gives you quite good odds for scorings. Kelso Portland temperature gradient can show earlier indication of how the pressure gradient will develop. If Kelso and Portland are close temperature wise in mid afternoon, I usually bet on gas savings.
Oh, and the onsite is always best. SMS from a friendly soul could safe a day (hint, hint ) |

PM me your cell and I'll add you to the notification list. The only problem is that SI conditions change quickly enough that sometimes you just have to be there and hang out to get the goods.
I'm sure that PDXmb doesn't even believe me anymore coz when he shows up an hour or two after I've txt'd him, the conditions have usually changed.
And to be honest, I was really surprised that it went off the last couple of days. _________________ Lets FLY |

You just have to be sure to do use the Fly Dunes conversion factor when you get a text with the wind report.
Reported wind x 0.60 (conversion rate) - 3 knots (if over 190 lbs) = true wind.
So if you get Dude! its solid 13-18 that means... 18 x 0.60 = 10.8 - 3 = 7.8 knots.
On the plus side though, I officially nominate Steve as the new Mayor of Sauvie Island. Thus replacing the mayor for the last 3 years running, Caesar. |

| I was at the airport for a few hours last night skate kiting, the wind wasn't nearly as good as the sensors said. I had to ditch the kite and just board several times. |

Lol. Balls!
I'm damn accurate with wind speed estimates. I can usually estimate wind speed within +/- 1 mph of actual. I've been reading and estimating wind speeds as if my life depends on it for the last 10 years or so. When flying paragliders if your estimate is off just a few miles an hour, you can end up in the unhappy situation of flying backwards.
I hereby challenge PDXmb to a contest of wind speed estimation. Least total mph off (peak and lull) over three samples. I've got an anemometer we can use to prove the actuals. Loser acknowledges the other's mad skills and pumps the other's kite whenever both are at the same site for the month of Sept.

I've noticed that the tide forecasts for Knapp Landing seem to be accurate for predicting the start of a flood (bad) tide, but less accurate for predicting the start of an ebb (good) tide. Flood tides seem to last longer than predicted.
The tide was forecast to go "good" at 6:30pm last nite, but it was still slack tide at ~7pm, and we didn't see a decent ebb tide going till around 7:30pm.
Maybe the forecasts are accurate, but slack tide just lasts longer than I'd expect , and slack tide isn't much better than flood tide for kiting.
If that's true then unless it's nuking, PM kiting will suck until at least next wednesday or thursday.
Here's the chart:
