If I started to wear a helmet I would probably break my leg. That said, I always wear one when hitting the sliders and what not.
Jeff, I got drilled in the head at the coast a couple weeks ago. Wave jacking up, messed up my jibe and flipped the board out between me and the wave. This is going to be ugl....BAM. Pretty scary stuff, getting tunnel vision and what not. But in the end, figured a helmet would just really mess up my hair so I don't bother in the ocean. |

If you can't figure out weather you need a helmut or not
you do
I've worn a hardhat or a helmut for most of my life.
If I was around hard objects I would wear one when kite-surfing.
in 10 years my board has hit me a couple times
It does id the kooks easily |

Bern makes nice helmuts. I have a sweet kayak helmut www.sweetprotection.com
- expensive but kevlar and lightweight.
I got it cause it was shiny silver and matched my aligator glitter encrusted squirt boat. Its over 10 years old and after wearing it every kiting session - it has completely faded to the base kevlar fabric - I'm guessing that the UV protection from the helmut is as important as the impact protection
I like the bill cause it keeps the sun off my face but no question it can be a neck snapper if you pull powered tricks or get slammed by a big wave - may update it with a hinged bill model.
Thanks for the kind words Twin Fin and I usually bounce a skimboard or surfboard hard off my head bout once a year _________________ Go Deep!

I am amazed that so many people ride without helmets. Especially in the gorge where the shoreline is so rocky. I went into the rocks at Stevenson in May(stupid on my part) and got a serious concussion while wearing my helmet. Without it I would probably be brain damaged or dead. Before that incident I was flirting with the idea of ditching the helmet... Sun protection from my bald head is one of the reasons I kept wearing it. I am grateful I kept the lid on. |

I hate my helmet.
If anyone knows where to purchase a XXXL size 7 7/8 helmet please clue me in. As it is I own, but never wear, a helmet that the mfg actually took 2 helmets and spliced together to build mine. Looks uglier than an ancient Pro-Tec. But why do I care?

Only if your wearing a helmet.
I don't know where other people are riding but I generally stay the hell away from the rocky shoreline, logs, navigation buoys, wing walls, and all those other things in and around the river that could hurt you.
Bottom line, if you want to wear a helmet fine but the majority of the time you are not at risk of the kind of blunt force trauma that necessitates a helmet. Riding a skateboard or motorcycle? Yeah, that is concrete below you, wear a friggin helmet. Water sports though? Not so sure about that one.
Shit happens indeed and shit happens fast. However, you have to remember that ALL kinds of shit happens. From car accidents to cancer. Some is random some is not. Its about calculated risk. You can't spend your whole life being risk averse lest you'll end up living in a bubble. The best you can do is decide what level of risk you are comfortable with.
You riding a motorcycle on the road without a helmet? Good, I don't want you breading anyways. But I think allot of people have made the determination that if you are a skilled kiteboarder than you can avoid many of the risks that beginners encounter that would result in head traumas. (bad launch, fail to punch out, in attention, kiting in the wrong weather, etc). Anyone starting out should probably wear a helmet until they have gained enough experience to anticipate what is going to happen and how to avoid dangerous situations.
My decision to not wear a helmet doesn't make me a stupid ego driven punk any more than your decision to wear one makes you a friggin kook. Its your lawn mowing, kite parking bafoonery that makes you a kook, not the helmet on your head. |

Dude you so don't need a helmut - your head broke the fucking picnic table - that mother is hard (in your defense you were seen looking for it - but it was night and we were too drunk)

I dont wear on because I DONT WANT TO!! ANd my board never hits me cause I am wearing heel straps so it doesnt come off in mid air. Helmets are not for everyone, and people should not be critical of thos who chose not to wear a helmet. Good for you if you wear one, good for you if you dont. Personal pref. My pref if not to.....and its going to b that way until Im compelled to.
I wear one when skiing because some of the best powder is either in the trees, or on steep where im doing ultra high speeds thru chutes etc. I have been in the water every summer almost every day my whole life and never gave a thought to a helmet.
Best to those who wear helmets, best to those that dont. |
