The Gorge in August can be super nice--warm steady wind. It can also be hot and windless, but 3 hours away the N. Oregon coast is usually firing when it's shut down near Hood River. The N. OR coast is very friendly wave kiting with side, to side on wind and smallish waves that time of year. I love it. I live here, and the Gorge/OR coast is great kiting. But, I have never gone to HI to kite and I want to some day.

is 106 deg. and no wind.

Like Eric said the coast in Oregon is fun, but the water is very cold so bring a thick wet suit.

Where are you from?

As for Hawaii, there is flat water, but waves tend to be the big focus as it's an island.

If you come to the gorge, Hood River in particular, be prepared for crowds when the wind blows.

Wink

Very Happy

Bulae knows all... not!

Goofyfoot, yes... this time of year Maui is quite windy and indeed quite choopy. With the ENE wind we usually get this time of year, most of the kiting is done in a small area around Kanaha, Lanes, and sometimes Kiehi... There are westside spots, but they take a more northerly direction to get going.

Sometimes we do get swells in the summer on the northshore, but mostly summer swells are smaller south swells. Right now the northshore is dead flat with some shoulder high windswell, but nothing in the way of organized waveriding. The south swells do make more some great longboarding and SUP'ing, but I would not expect you to find any kiteable south side ways.

The wind is pretty much always on in the summer, but with the easterly direction can get very strong and gusty. So gusty in fact that it makes the Gorge tame in comparison. But in the end, the water is warm and the people friendly... So, let me know if you head this way!

I also lived in the Gorge for about 13 years, and can tell you that summer time there is absolutely amazing. If your prepared to do other things when the wind dies off, you would also have a great vacation there.

Thanks, Jon Malmberg

Sorry, but had to re-release this remix of hall and oates "rich girl". . . http://www.nwkite.com/forums/t-10173-0.html

You're a tool bluae99, and you've gone too far
'Cause you don't know correct advice matters anyway

It's a bitch bluae99 but it's gone too far
'Cause you don't give proper kiting advice anyway
Use your advice but it won't get you too far,
Get you too far

And don't you know, don't you know
Much about proper ocean kiting technique anyway
So far gone, on your advice, but how could you be wrong?
You can't seem to listen from others on the forum or get along
You over-post and are often wrong
'Cause

You're a tool bluae99, and you've gone too far

Get you too far

High and dry, and out of the ocean waves
It's so easy to hurt others spewing out your misconstrued, unsolicited ways
And don't you know that your kiting skills can't grow
'Cause you like to give out your limited experience rather than listen and live from watching the show
For the thrill of it all, oh

You're a tool bluae99, and you've gone too far
'Cause you don't know correct advice matters anyway
You can't rely on bluae99's advice like the old man's money

And bluae99 you convey your experience like it is the proper way
You can rely on my advice like the old man's money

But your a Tool bluae99, a Tool bluae99
Oh, you're a STANLEY 3-in-1 multi-use TOOL Bluae99 yeah
Use your advice but it won't get you too far,
Oh, get ya too far

Thanks for the feedback.

Travelling alone so may save the N Oregon Coast/Gorge for when I have some crew with me as it looks like some driving to chase the wind could be involved.

Here are some pics of my spots 5mins from home

To hell with Maui... Goofyfoot... wow, is that someplace in Australia? Is there a wavespot nearby, as that would make it perfection. Looks like you don't have a big crowd there either. Do tell...

Maui would be a good halfway point if your headed home to Australia... Let me know if you decide to drop by and visit on your way south.

Hey Eric, how are things back home in da Gorge! Ooops, did I just slip and call the Gorge home?

Really great Jon. Both of my boys are kiting now and that's super fun. I have become good friends with Stuart S. and his family--great people.

Busted up a finger and had to ride a strapless directional to avoid doing anything too stupid--man, that's fun. The only thing I really missed about windsurfing was gybing on swell. Now, I get to do that too.

Take care,

Eric

Very nice shots of your home turf, Goofy! Careful, though, you might get some Oregonians knocking on your door come winter...

Hey I was there five years. really cool people in kiteboarding and locals. Just do as they do in rome. Use there dialect and just be happy. Wailuku maui Banana Bungalow is primier and they may trade work . teach kiteboarding . Stay away from Wainman always trying too look cool and is a gypsy that smokes . You just want everyone too know your the chief of the Beitch thats standard. Definately get the pirate sticker and just remember who the wind God is through your network/magazines and all the bosses who are rich and glamorized in this sport. Coolest place on earth because all the love. Its in the eyes. Get layed and become pro in the mags Fucking Aloha beach. Real kiters don't dang or follow Lou because he is going too get hurt. He and his little short man clan are nothing but a disgrace to kiteworld and they are ruining Aloha beach/kite beach. kiting is in the hands of windsurf specialists connected to the locals

Sincerely, Gonzo Wai
