Maybe he doesn't like taking pictures of weddings? I am sure he will take your career advice to heart though

Checked out your site. Beautiful stuff, Trevor! The digital photography revolution, like the desktop publishing revolution before it, has done two things. It's put some amazing technology into the hands of the public and enabled a lot of would-be creatives to expand the scope of what they're capable of at the hobby level. Unfortunately, it's also had the effect of eroding the public's value of creative professionals who put in the time, study, practice and sacrifice necessary to perfect their craft and realize their vision. Best of luck to you, man!

You should learn to kite because most photogs that don't disappear after a couple months. Share the stoke and don't hate. If you want to see some local photos in a mag pick up the latest kiteboarding mag and see Forrest's monster raley.

I heard Trevor is learning to kite and is a natural at it.
As far as changing our image goes, it would be interesting to see kiteboarding in outdoor/adventure magazines.
I think that would really help us seem less like adrenaline fueled stunt junkies and more like actual athletes doing a real sport.
Press like that will help us in the future when trying to maintain access and put features in the water.
Trevor, thanks for your effort!
See you on the water!

I don't think you'd say that if you knew him.
I applaud anyone that takes the big leap and lives their dream. Would you rather take pics of weddings or kiters?
Trevor has taken some pics of me kiting and paragliding that, given my advanced age, I'm sure will only be suitable for viagra or AARP ads. I hope he sells a ton of them.

Photog owns copyright, no doubts there. And as long as he has proper signed subject release "For consideration that I acknowledge ... blah blah" he can do with it as he pleases.

You could always lower the res and put a fat watermark on your images and send people that if they ask, or a link to an online gallery with the pics in it. As long as you lower the res and have the watermark, and dont give away any mag shots, u should be ok.

| Just a tip is that there isn't really any $$$$ in kiteboarding photo's...you could probably make more $$$ selling the photos of the rider to the riders....just something to think about. I am sure all those guys at Jones would drop a bit of cash for photos of themselves.

if you like shooting wake---
why aren't you at the sandbar
got a fun crew here now, with james and erk, shannon is in town, medysky, and david
kicker is on the water
the big box is back and should be back out by weekend or early next week
most photogs i work with give me my pics for my personal collection, with the agreement that if the shots get used that the photo still belongs to the photographer. therefore permission must be obtained.
but i don't go posting my shots on the net either
besides, without the rider, what kinda pics would you get

Trevor, your obviously a cool guy and you indeed know how to take some great pictures. There are many valid points in this thread ranging from its awesome to follow your dreams and strike your own course to hey, all you do is take take take- publishing kiteboard pictures in the mainstream media does little to improve the stoke.
As you probably learned, kiteboarders are absolute lens whores and love to see themselves and show others how they are progressing. It's a little more than just ego, there is the WAPaah factor to it. I would think however that if people are expending their energy to work with you so you can get the shot but they get nothing in return for it, that at some point people are just going to say "ummm yeah, I'm just going to go ride".
Their are many a talented semi-pro and professional photographers that get their primo pictures published in the magazines and media while still managing to give out or post a few selected images to share the stoke. Your hoeing a tough row and to make it, I think that a diversified marketing strategy, and one that gets riders stoked to push it in front of your lens would ultimately benefit you and your business. It seems that this diversified strategy would include a way for people to view your images and purchase them for themselves if they want. I'm sure your technologically savy enough to limit the general public's viewing of your files to include only those that are actually in the image.
