| I left my board on the grass for two hours Sunday and when I returned it was gone. I've been Kiteboarding in Hood River for 3 years now and have always assumed that I didn't have to worry about that kind of crap. That was my only board and I'm out until I can come up with some cash for a new one. |

Hey Scott I've got an old but mint Caution Redline probably similar to the one you had stolen you can use until funding comes in. Pm me.
I'm down for the sting operation and ensuing flipper beatings. |

| I posted it last summer, but it's worth mentioning again that during last year's Gorge Games I had two boards stolen out of my vehicle parked on the road just across from the Event Site. The tweaker smashed the window to get 'em. It's probably not a bad idea to make sure your gear isn't visible in your car, even if it's not brand new. I'd like to think this wouldn't have happened if the Games weren't going on, but I'm not taking any more chances. |

| I was charging up my MacBook in a small black Jansport backpack by the bathrooms at the Event Site. I turned my back for two minutes and it was gone. It was 8:30am and only 10 cars parked on a calm Sunday morning. I felt I was among a trustworthy cadre of wind sport enthusiasts. I was so wrong. I accosted everyone there, but got nothing but disinterested shoulder shrugs. I'm certain I spoke directly to the thief, but what could I do? Forcibly search suspect cars and motor homes? It's no longer the Hood River I used to know. Be on guard at all times at the Hood River Theft Emporium! |

Longshot maybe, but an out of town teenager was caught with stolen goods in Medford OR not too long ago with stolen items from Hood River. Apparently he rides Greyhound to touristic places and steals whatever he can them hops on the afternoon bus, to somewhere else, sells, repeat...
This was told to me last night by a Hood River friend whose stolen kayak gear was found in Medford. Same deal, left car for 60 seconds in the AM and bam.

I'd like to see him "hop" anything with broken kneecaps. Theft of all kinds has a significant impact on one's quality of life and we as a culture and a nation are far too lenient on it. _________________ Let's go kite. |

I got a call today. A woman with a newly acquired MacBook was wondering if I might be the past owner. My phone number showed up on a "sent" email from the suspected past owner's outbox (me). She was interested in knowing the administrative password to add some new software. Apparently her husband bought the laptop several days ago from someone for $200. The seller said he had several laptops and didn't need this one any more. He sold it at a restaurant called Dixie's, in Hood River. I haven't learned his name yet, but the folks at Dixie's said he drives a travel van with psychedelic markings on it. The caller promptly shut down after just a few questions. Anyone have any ideas? Check the earlier posts. I had my MacBook jacked on August 16th at around 8am in the Event Site parking lot. Only 10 vehicles were there at the time.

did you report the laptop stollen?
If you have the phone number she called from. Give it to the police, unless you've got your laptop back already.
buying stolen property isn't legal.
I've seen a van like that at SI once in a while. |

Call the police ASAP. Even if the caller ID was blocked, the police should be able to identify the caller. Since the caller now knows the laptop was stolen, failure to turn it over to the rightful owner or the police is a felony I believe. (Receiving stolen goods.) I think, with a call from the police, they'll be more than happy to turn over your laptop.
Write down the time of the call and a transcription of what was said by both you and the caller. Do this now. It's amazing how little time it takes to start blurring your memory of the details.
Good luck! |

Also you might want to edit the post. Take all the info about the crook out and simply state you will provide info via pm. Just incase the thief lurks on the forum. |

Wish I was still in town so I could drop by Dixie's and talk to the people who work there. The guy has got to be a regular. If we could just find out who's been hanging out at the bar there selling laptops, we might save someone else from getting ripped off. If nothing else, people should know who this person is so we can all be on guard when he shows up at the parking lot. Trust me, getting ripped off (and particularly where your guard is down because you feel you're in a place of trust) feels like total crap.

P.S. I have the number that called and it has been passed along. |

Most rip offs are crimes of opportunity, so don't lock up your shizit.

| Does anyone know a guy called "Mel" who drives a campervan and sometimes hangs out at Dixie's? He is purportedly the gentleman who hawked my hot MacBook. Anyone? |
