[drunk post]

why can't kites be launched from the event site lawn?

water is up all the time so virtually no sandbar.

time to poach.

and what's up with the line?

1/5th of the event site.

is that all?

WTF?

I'd be guessing it's a liability thing. Best to have patience, let the system work, this is a trial period and it's better than nothing.

For one thing I think it's good to keep people either coming, going, or getting the F out of the way. I broke the rules and attached my lines on the grass today, but it made for a quick and easy drift-launch as few people were there yet. When I came in it was a little busy but everyone cooperated quite well.

And while we're drinking and ranting, what's with people kiting right by the sandbar itself? There's a whole stinking river, so get the heck out of the way of people trying to launch or trying to land.

Damn, I missed happy hour!

with all due respect,

B fucking S

been 10 years now since kiting 'started' in the Gorge.

patience is 3-5 years

10 years is an INJUSTICE

I remember in the old days when you bought a lift ticket at the ski resort, they would ask you if you were skiing or snowboarding.

I think the Port should do the same thing when they sell a day permit or season pass to the Event Site.
If they had some hard data on the numbers of kiters vs. windsurfers that were using the place, they could divide it in a more fair manner.

Yeah, I understand the port or whoever has rules and we are trying to " earn " the right for more space so need to follow the guidelines or risk losing what we have....BUT I found it more than a little ridicoulous when up for memorial day weekend and for a "busy" weekend there would have been plenty of room for rigging/launching from what I could see. Lots of grass available even with the poleboarders and rubberneckers there.

I dont live there but when I am there it seems that there are far more kiters than windsurfers. Even if the event site was split 50/50 windsurfers dont need near as much room to rig/launch and should have PLENTY of room to do so and with 50% of the space kiters would have enough room as well, especially if using launch protocol similar to stevenson

I was at the meeting where we got the Water Front Recreation Committee to vote to recommend pumping and drying at the Event Site. There was a little talk of a line, but nothing like that dirt strip. My guess is that the windsurfing influence of the WFRC convinced someone at the Port to draw a big fuck-off permanent line so that come August first when the WFRC meets to discuss how this has worked, they won't be able to move the line... I think the line was intentionally done to try and block any further growth of the kite area.

I think the solution to the high water problem is try and get the Army Corps of Engineers to back off their water storage and keep the water at a reasonable level. The CGKA is already working on this through the Port of Hood River.

Hein, are you a CGKA member? Razz

I don't think launching and landing at the Event Site would work on weekends. There just isn't enough margin for error.

We have a "count" page going on the CGKA section. Please Please do a head count of how many kiters are at the eventsite and on the water. Also a windsurfer head count. Then post up. Include the day and time. A photo is a plus.

If everyone did that a couple of times a month, I will have enough numbers to show the Port that we are biggest users..

Please help!!

A 'count' page? LOL. Can't they just look out the window? Stevenson has one launch and it works well on most any day. Why does the Port think they need to regulate us for our own safety? Let us launch off the grass. A safe, manageable system will evolve in short order. If someone gets lofted then so be it; the dangers of kite boarding are well known; and the ambulance will be able to pull right up in the parking lot.

ah fuck it, never mind.

and the Kooks will inherit the earth.

While I know that it is not the most popular thing to say I do not believe it is a good idea to launch from the Event Site. I understand that it would be nice to have more access but the event site is packed with people on weekends has gusty conditions and is relatively small. If we did get access and had kites launching from the event site the risk of a major accident would be very high. I would like everyone to think about what we are asking for. If we get access to the event site for launching and landing and then have a incident in front of a large crowd on the weekend we would be shut down in Hood River and potentially other areas.

I understand this is not the most popular argument but please think about the potential repercussions of opening access to the event site for launching and landing.

we should own the marina beach. that used to be windsurfing and now is totally empty of wind sports.

i realize it is further away from the clean wind but damn- parking is free!
