If you can't release from the kite...this is what could happen, if you're lucky.

I think that's the coolest thing I've ever seen :O)

I love how the camera man is watching a really hot chick then the train wreck draws away his attention. Ahh human nature.

Watching this video raises the hair on my neck. This happened to me while learning in Ventana. I overflew the kite while turning. The kite fell down to the water, the lines went slack and I rode into the lines - not yet smart enough to avoid at all costs. I guess I thought that since the kite was down I was okay to get things sorted out.

The kite powered and launched me. Since I was learning I had been through a couple out of control launches so far and I was pretty relaxed, figuring the kite would rise and settle down - but it just kept dragging me. The water was flooding into my face and over my head so I couldn't see the kite - could not get a breath and didn't know what was happening. Released the chicken loop - no help, in fact it made things worse. I went to release the safety and noticed that it wasn't taunt - really could not figure that out, but released it anyway. No result.

So by this time I am thinking that this is how I am gonna go.

What had happened was that a steering line had caught on my hook and of course the kite was power looping endlessly. I didn't figure this out as by now I was in panic. Never occurred to me to pull my knife. Finally I managed to roll over on my back to get some air. Jim Bison saved my ass by running down my kite (or I guess I would have gone overland to Los Barrilles!). He took a risk by launching and just jumping on it to stop it.

My main points are (1) (mr obvious!) Stay the F away from your lines in the water! And (2) Rehearse everything that can go wrong so you can have a calm plan to recover!

By the posts here this is not totally uncommon - so be prepared!
