Skimmys Rock, I bought a used 07 Nobile over the winter and have been addicted to it ever since. It has such a skatey feel to it, and surfing the waves on it is the stuff.

Two seasons ago I bought one of those small $50ish skims from 2nd Wind, thinking it'd be fun for a day or two, knowing well that it might be too small to be much fun. I've since been riding it frequently in light wind with a 12m and have been having soo much fun with it. The only drawback is that it's a bit too small for me to jibe, it's about 115cm long, so I end up riding it like a twin tip, now I'd like to get something a bit bigger, if I could find the same board 6" longer I think I'd be set. Back when I bought it there was a beautiful carbon Cabal (perfect size too) in the consignment rack for about $250, I just couldn't justify paying 5x the price for something I wasn't even sure I'd like. A part of me wishes I grabbed it at the time. Given how much fine I've had with my skim it surprises me that more people aren't riding skims in light wind and that there are so few kite-specific skims on the market.

Cheers!

Glad you're digging the wood skim. For the money, they're definitely the best light wind tool out there.

For changing directions on that small of a stick, you might want to try shuv-its. Just pick a little piece of chop, bend the knees and simultaneously hop while kicking your back foot behind you to spin the board. Keep your eyes down and watch for the board to spin 180 so you can extend your feet and 'catch' it before it over rotates. Sounds tough but try it and you'll be surprised.

Unfortunately the Cabal's aren't around anymore, but we will be getting the Surftech Roush skims here at 2nd Wind sometime this month. They're pretty much the same shape with a few added benefits. They're built with fin rope along all the rails, so if you'd like you can actually tune the board by shaving off layers of glass; more rounded rail for more of a smooth surf feel and sharper for load and pop tricks. The construction is bomber, and I think they're going to retail for less than the Cabal's did.

As far as kite-specific skims, there really isn't a need. Skims that kill it without the kite will kill it with the kite, they just need to be ridden properly, ie less power, weight forward on the board (no relying on fins) and knees bent. Get dialed in light winds and you can have a blast on the swell on those nuked out eastern gorge days.

Roush - Morpheous or Rasta - work well

So persuasive! Couldn't resist Rasta just for the look of it!

If your going to build a skim, build a nice one. not some ghetto particle board POS.
