Skim Suggestions?

I just read the "river barges..." thread, I can't believe I missed out on that action.

I was wondering what people are riding for skimboards. I know I could post on a skim forum but I'm more interested in what locals are on. Zap? Cabal? Nobile? Is Cabal still around?

Yea I would say for sure the surftech boards morphious or rasta. They are the only boards with grab rail for kiting, and You can't beat the price 258 in most stores!!! Cabal is no longer, and Victoria is way over priced= 400+.

I agree that Surftech is your best bang for the buck. I know that Pepi has em at 2nd Wind. After a few sessions on the skim it will easily be one of your favorite boards in your quiver. Thumb's Up

what works better for light wind a skim or a surfboard?

Hands down a skim board. The fins on a surfboard creat a lot of drag.

What are the dimensions of a good skim?

Is anybody doing this on standing river waves?

Does the length and volume of the board matter as in surfing?

The Length and rocker profile are the real important things to look for on a skim. Less rocker = better light wind preformance. Typical length is 48"-52" and the width can typically vary depending upon personal preferance. The volume does not play as much of a part as in surfboards, just be sure to get an epoxy board as they are super tough for all the shallow water riding you will be doing. Wood skims work, just not as good as an expoxy deck.

The skim is a ton of fun on the swell, and its a great way to improve your strapless skillz.

Thanks for the info guys. Bulae beat me to the next question about skim dimensions. Two seasons ago I bought one of those small $50ish skims from 2nd Wind, thinking it'd be fun for a day or two, knowing well that it might be too small to be much fun. I've since been riding it frequently in light wind with a 12m and have been having soo much fun with it. It's unbelievable how much better upwind it rips thanks to its width and flat rocker than my 137cm TT. The only drawback is that it's a bit too small for me to jibe, it's about 115cm long, so I end up riding it like a twin tip, now I'd like to get something a bit bigger, if I could find the same board 6" longer I think I'd be set. Back when I bought it there was a beautiful carbon Cabal (perfect size too) in the consignment rack for about $250, I just couldn't justify paying 5x the price for something I wasn't even sure I'd like. A part of me wishes I grabbed it at the time. Given how much fine I've had with my skim it surprises me that more people aren't riding skims in light wind and that there are so few kite-specific skims on the market.
