It would be simple, if the only thing we were doing was a website. It's been a low priority item as keeping access and planning events has been trumping it. It's here, just not launched yet: http://new.cgka.net

If you have any ideas that would help us be more transparent, communicate more with our members, convince more to become members, at the same time not requiring major time from the already maxed out board of directors then I will do something publicly humiliating for your personal pleasure. Smile

Publicly renounce boots Laughing Laughing Laughing

Seriously though, the website looks pretty damn good already..roll that shit out.

In terms of improvements and maximizing its exposure, it would be cool if each of the launch spots had a small write up. Specifically, one that provides the local beta at the each site and basically lets newbs know how each site "works". Then when people say "hey, I'm from Hillsboro and I want to kite here" we can say..go to the CGKA site, get the low down on the gorge, and get involved.

there is no reason why the board members have to write this stuff, I'm sure plenty of us could write something up for each site. Or poach it off the CGWA website.

So would you say the CGKA prioritizes raising more money or having more members? It seems that increasing membership fee will bring in more money, but could potentially hurt member count. If the goal is to have strength in numbers then cheaper if not free membership could be the best option. Other membership levels (like Pepi suggested) could require greater donations/fees and provide more benefits. Sorry if this is a stupid question that's already been discussed, but I didn't see anything mentioned in the meeting notes.

The cost of making improvements to launches is a priority as is getting more members. But in reality it's about raising money to improve launches.

The Hook is one example. I'm working with the Port of Hood River as a member of the Hook Committee to improve the launch at the Hook. The ideal place for us to launch is an errosion site. The Port is spending a few thousand to fix it, but if we had a few thousand to match the Port, we'd be able to make it happen pretty fast rather than next year.

Anyway.... Tell ya what. Instead of renouncing boots, we can bolt some high heal pumps to a board and I'll wear a speedo and ride while everyone takes pictures.

Shocked Please, no.

As a somewhat less tortuous idea for a fundraiser/membership drive, how about a kite clinic day? Charge an entrance admission, have burgers & beer available. Music. Clinics all day from newbie level to advanced. trainer kites, rigging kites, tuning bars, waterstarts, self rescue, jumping, tricks, sliders. Something for everybody. Intermediate & advanced clinics require CGKA membership, available for signup at the site.

Good idea or just too much?

It's a good idea and we'll do that during all of the events we're planning, but the reward of me in highheals and a speedo is for an idea that doesn't require a bunch of time from us. Smile

We're all very maxed out and some of us have worked full-time on some of the projects at times.

I think that monkeyboy nailed it...
it's really just visibility.
I was explaining to mark
that I don't really want to pay dues
if they are just going to be used
to have another BBQ. He explained
to me that there might be a new
site in development, etc...

The average non-member (like me)
doesn't see where all the money or
work is going.

Membership drives for new sites,
or stating repairs that are needed,
those would make me more willing
to join the cause.

I'm pretty liberal about donations
when I know the money is going
somewhere that will reap benefit
for the group.

Come on Forrest, I hope you don't think we are telling you how to do things. You asked how to increase transparancy, communication, and boost membership and I provided what I thought was a valid way to do all three.

Brett raised a very valid point and I simply had a suggestion that if the group had more exposure than more people would join. I am not the first person to raise the question of "what is the CGKA doing?". There are many people that are very active in the kiteboarding community, know everyone else, and still have absolutely no idea what is going on.

I know that you guys have been busting your arse and there is not a whole lot of people that ever bother to show up to the meetings. But let me ask you this, what good is doing all that work if nobody realizes that your doing it? All people have to gain some insight into what is going on is the meting minutes.

I'm not saying go forth and do it all yourself, I'm saying that I (and I'm sure other people) are willing to chip in and help. It would be great to watch you ride in high heels but in terms of convincing people that "hey, I want to spend $20 and get on board with this group" You probably are not going to see a line of people waiting to join the organization.

Who is in charge of the website anyways? Do they know that if you click on cgka above, get blocked for not being a member, and then follow the link, it leads to 2 year old meeting notes and 2008's demo day post?

I'm not trying to be overtly negative, just trying to play the part of joe blow who is looking for info on the CGKA that is all.

No minutes since January, not bitchin just looking for a update. And before you say it I dont live close enough to attend. I gladly pay the dues, $20 is nothing compared to the price of kite gear and I know you guys are working on many improvements
