Here's Grom and Rachel at the end of their 7 mile downwinder in SPI on 040409. The pics are from the third floor of our condo so looking a little down which flattens the waves but you can't see the riders when you're on the beach. We're still trying to figure out which floor to shoot from. Other than cropping them, I didn't change the colors. The northerlies kick up all the fine sand and turn the water gray which adds to the intensity where you're out there. They didn't know I was shooting pics so they'tre just having fun going by and not trying for the perfect pic. Some of the waves were double overhead on the 3rd set that day.

oh so jealous!!!

Winter was a little lean and trying to be in SPI for the SPI Roundup days so bummed I can't afford to be there for the whole month of April and be there now. Looks like it's been ON classic spring SPI style. Wish I was strapless and shirtless out there with those guys on my LF Rawson Surfboard backside on a NE downwinder!

We're heading down on the 19th to San Antonio to show off the baby to the family and ride the cable park for a week. Then down to SPI on the 26th for 2 weeks. Can't wait!

PostSat Apr 11, 09 12:35 pm    Looking to go to SPI Solo:-( Reply with quote

Hey there,

Never been there, most of the NWKite crew is there now. I'm unemployed and trying to get a business going, but since I've been on mandatory bedrest for a week and a few days I've been screwed.....

Anyhow, I was thinking of trying to get out there around the 15th., or so, not sure yet, and since I've never been down there, where is the best place to stay? Phil and the gang have a place, they are packed, was going to try to stay in a hotel near them. Hoping the hotels are dirt cheap, wanted to be as close as possible to the water to just carry stuff, especially, since that UHaul will most likely be gone once Phil and the gang leave on the 22nd...... If they even have extra room for another kiters things.

Carol and Tony are you anywhere near Phil and the gang? You are near the waves they are near the flat water. How long are you there for? Nice to know kiters there, especially to launch and land and/or kite with.

Tekko what is the spi roundup, just rounding people up to go down there?

Anyone else going that may want to split some "housing"? Vehicle? Interested in going to the cable park?

Sorry, I cannot PM people, so I have to ask lame a&^ questions on the forum...

I was thinking of checking out the cable park, how far from SPI? Isn't it right there?

Plane tickets are expensive, but I was looking for a hotel and vehicle deal with it... Not sure if a vehicle is needed, unless Im going to the cable park and it is far away.

Hubby has to work and can't get off and we can only afford one of us to go, and I'm using it mostly for business. So, any advise anyone can give to me that would be great.

I would be taking my 7-13 kites, my regular ceasar board and the glide apparently, then the least amount of clothing, as luggage regulations suck right now, and then hoping to kite everyday.... and do business of course:-)

I can receive PM's just not send them.

My e-mail account is: brdrchick@gmail.com if anyone has anything they'd like to add or send to me off the forum:-) or if you PM me, provide me your e-mail address so I can write you back:-)

Answer Man to the rescue!

My answers right below your questions, skipped the formatting to save time.

Carol and Tony are you anywhere near Phil and the gang?
About a mile away.

You are near the waves they are near the flat water.
Both Smile Waves out the back door, flat water on the other side of the island. Island is only 3 blocks wide. Flat water riding spot is about 2 miles north of us.

How long are you there for?
We're here till May 15th.

Tekko what is the spi roundup, just rounding people up to go down there?
www.spikiteroundup.com 10 day long kiting event.

I was thinking of checking out the cable park, how far from SPI? Isn't it right there?
No - I think the cable park is near San Anotnio.

Plane tickets are expensive, but I was looking for a hotel and vehicle deal with it... Not sure if a vehicle is needed, unless Im going to the cable park and it is far away.
You'll need a vehicle to get to the flats although you could do it on a bicycle or bum a ride everyday. Lots of cheap hotels starting next week. You can hit town and get a better deal by walking in and asking for a weekly rate.

I would be taking my 7-13 kites, my regular ceasar board and the glide apparently, then the least amount of clothing, as luggage regulations suck right now, and then hoping to kite everyday.... and do business of course:-)
Good kite combo and we have larger boards you can use if it gets really light.

Off to kite now, more answers later!

Tony

Thanks for the responses... I'll just try to get my plane tickets, and then look for a vehicle and a place to stay once I get there... I'm usually the one who is very into having everything secured before I go, but I'll just swing it. I might have to take a flight to San Antonio to check-out the cable park. Cool, you will be there for awhile. I'll check-out that link that you sent about the kiting event. THANK YOU!

Any other information when you are done kiting is much appreciated:-)

How far are you away from the airport?

SPI is about 35 minutes from Brownsville airport (BRO), and about 50 minutes from Harlingen (HRL). Southwest flies into Harlingen, Continental flies into Brownsville. Certain times of the year Southwest will say that you can't get to Harlingen from Portland. But you can do it if you book PDX to HOU then HOU to HRL separately. You'll be able to check your bags all the way through just have to be creative in the booking process.

I am flying back to PDX on Tuesday for a couple of days of work then returning to Brownsville on the red eye Thursday night. If you catch that flight I can give you a ride to SPI on Friday morning.
